Historia
Austin Channing Brown’s first encounter with a racialized America came at age seven, when she discovered her parents named her Austin to deceive future employers into thinking she was a white man. Growing up in majority-white schools and churches, Austin writes, “I had to learn what it means to love blackness,” a journey that led to a lifetime spent navigating America’s racial divide as a writer, speaker, and expert helping organizations practice genuine inclusion.

THANK YOU

I truly appreciated reading your book. I related to so many, if not, everything you wrote about, but I also learned so much. You've made me think, reflect, consider, ignite, and cry over topics and imagery, etc. you put into words so many memories, thoughts, conversations, and experiences. I also would love to take your 'Letter to my son', do a slight rewrite and give it to my daughter, lol.
But in all seriousness, Huge Thank You!! I'd also like to buy copies now and give them to my white in-laws with a note that reads "I'm just saying!"

Historia
In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever. This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

Historia
Affluence, autonomy, safety, and power. These are the central values of the American dream. But are they actually compatible with Jesus' command to love our neighbor as ourselves? In essays grouped around these four values, D. L. Mayfield asks us to pay attention to the ways they shape our own choices, and the ways those choices affect our neighbors. Where did these values come from? How have they failed those on the edges of our society? And how can we disentangle ourselves from our culture's headlong pursuit of these values and live faithful lives of service to God and our neighbors?

Slow start but good read
Revisado: 09-03-20
My husband bought me this book and when I first began reading it, I had a difficult time understanding where the book was going. What direction was the author going to take. Overall it was a good book, a bit condemning and judgmental, but maybe that’s a bit of the point based on the topic. To be a child of God means to love your neighbor as yourself. This means regardless of color or creed, whether they wear a burka, speak other languages, or worship other Gods, love is love. She made many excellent points about this country and what is supposedly stands for, and as a black woman reading her book, I could relate to her many messages and appreciate the message she was putting out there.
