The story was engaging. But the reader gives a cringeworthy pronunciation of the call sign for Guidance Officer Steve Bales. The call sign Guido rhymes with Fido, as one might think from Guidance officer. But the reader goes Italian and pronounces it Gweedo. Otherwise a competent but not exceptional read.

Got hooked on series when Jonathan Davis was the reader. The current reader, RK Ross, just does accents. Davis brought characters to life. This book another fun story from Rehder. All the fun and nuance ruined and lost by the reader.

The reader is flat awful compared to Jonathan Davis who read the first 6 volumes I listened to. Gone is the perfectly rendered, ever so light Hispanic accent of Bobby Garza, so true to what you hear in life. Gone is the slow, ponderous speech of Billy Don, so adroitly crafted to fit his huge size and mannerisms as Rehder portrays them. The voice John Marlin by this reader bears no relation to the character portrayed by the author. If I were Ben Rehder, I'd be seriously offended by this brutalization of an otherwise fine and entertaining story.

Had to force myself to listen thru to the end. The ending was like one of those spoofs of melodrama where the dying heroine makes a long speech then flops around allegedly dying and then starts another speech and flopping and then does it all again. And again. Authors couldn't decide between plot and character. Speechifying instead of dialogue. Preston did much better on his own in "Impact" where story and character were tighter and more cohesive.
