I spent the last few weeks listening to the entire Mary Russell series so getting a new narrator with this book seemed unforgivable when I first started. After a quick Google, I understand why it had to be done. I simply cannot imagine anyone but Jenny Sterlin as Mary Russell. That being said, I became accepting of the new narrator, however it did not mean I felt it was a fit. The voice did not feel mature enough for me. Nor were the accents/voices for the various characters consistent. Throughout the series, I felt Mary was mature for her age, as she is. With this narration, it didn't feel that way. It felt like Mary was a girl in her twenties, essentially the child she is considering the age of everyone involved.. As to the actual story, it was every bit of a Mary Russell story that I've fallen in love with over the series. Laurie R. King truly fleshes out her characters and stories so well. As the story was coming together, I was yelling internally for Russell and Holmes to come back together because for once I was able to figure it all out. Not to say she made it to easy, King just did it so well. A potential spoiler is that this story felt too final for me. The notes at the end make it seem like there's more to come of the series, but the way the book ended made me feel otherwise. I don't know where to go from here now 🙃

I agree with a lot of the other reviews. I usually take the reviews with a grain of salt, but omg this story is dull in comparison to the podcast. I'm actually not even done with it. I'm at a point where I have to just finish but the narration is also terrible. I don't necessarily know if it's the fault of the narrator or the story. Every time the narrator reads "so and so said" she has this weird inflection that is soooo irritating. I'm very sad that this story didn't live up to the podcast.
