Deep. Thorough, insightful treatment of the 8-fold path. Wonderful closing to the 3-part series. Great contribution to Buddhist literature

Really insightful. Probably not for beginners. I've read about a dozen or so books on Buddhism and a lot of this was more advanced than what I was able to grasp. If you are serious about learning about the Theravada tradition, though, even if you don't pick it up the first time through, it's hard to imagine a better resource. Goldstein seems extremely knowledgeable and translates ideas very clearly to an English-speaking audience. Volume 3 will likely be even more advanced, but I look forward to it.

I feel badly for the author because she suffers from a debilitating disease. But it was hard to like this book. I thought about naming this review 'Sappy Buddhism from the Hamptons'. That's what it sounds like to me.

It reads like a romance novel. The example patients are not believable because they all use the exact same types of expressions, though it's written as though she's quoting them.

I'm also surprised when people who espouse Buddhist thought are vaguely hostile to what sounds like their shallow misperceptions about conservatism.

There is a reasonably good intro to the RAIN method. Otherwise, there's not much here unless you are a woman who likes to indulge in fantasies about men opening up emotionally to you, or if you like reading books with references to 'social justice', or if you want to feel like you're doing emotional work when you're probably really not.

I hope the author has found peace, though, and would not wish her condition on anyone.

It is a little advanced in some parts, but is an amazing discussion of the mindfulness sutra. Will definitely buy volume 2. Could do without the music between chapters, but otherwise I feel like this is a must-listen for anyone interested in learning about mindfulness.

Sober, reasoned, insightful, beautifully-written. Good read for liberals and conservatives alike... anyone wishing to understand the Trump phenomenon without hyper-partisan invective.

2 1/2 hrs of commentary. Then 1 1/2 hrs of actual dhammapada. Nether struck me as particularly inspired.

Very interesting insights and ideas about Western secular Buddhism. And extremely well-written. Not sure if Wright is correct in all of his conclusions, but he makes compelling arguments that should be considered by lay-readers and psychology researchers alike. Also, his insights are helpful in advancing one's practice. I hope to take his online course.

If you are a 14-yr-old girl with no social skills and are excited at the prospect of a 7-hr relationship self-help article in a tabloid magazine, this book is for you.

Gibson's earlier book, Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents, was poorly written, but touched on some very important topics and was quite insightful in my view. I'd hoped this book would expand on those topics. Instead, it obscures them with oversimplified drivel that no trained therapist would take seriously, like 'just snap out of your dissociation'. Read Adult Children of EIPs, but skip this one. Seems like she's just trying to squeeze a few more bucks out of people.

Books on Buddhism risk getting mired in the Buddhist laundry lists (8 of these, 51 of those, 36 of these...). This book meanders through them and I found myself forgetting where we were going quite a bit. Red-blooded American men interested in exploring Buddhism: be prepared for phrases like 'renewing your flowerness'. It's a bit unecessarily political, perhaps, to go with the time in which it was written, e.g. manufacturing ammo and being a butcher are wrong livelihood, but no mention of performing abortions. Whatever. In fairness, he does criticize violence and sex in Hollywood. Treatment of the 8-fold path is clearer in this book, in my opinion, than in some other books I've read, so it's helpful if you want more perspective on that. Time might have been better spent meditating.

Engaging, entertaining. Very positive lesson for anyone! I usually don't finish a whole book in a day, but couldn't put this one down.
