Feels very dated
Revisado: 11-07-24
These characters feel dated and completely unbelievable, even if written for comedy. I don’t think their personalities, dialogue, or situations would work in their own time unless to a drunk or extremely unsophisticated audience.

Beyond tedious.

I was expecting an atmospheric murder mystery set on a ship with a psychic detective, not a 9 hr dissertation on Marconi with a true life mystery barely peppered in.

Historia
In September 1949 Jacqueline Bouvier arrives in postwar Paris to begin her junior year abroad. She’s twenty years old, socially poised but financially precarious, and all too aware of her mother’s expectations that she make a brilliant match. Before relenting to family pressure, she has one year to herself far away from sleepy Vassar College and the rigid social circles of New York, a year to explore and absorb the luminous beauty of the City of Light.

Reads like a really bad romance novel.
Revisado: 06-07-24
The book is well researched but badly written to the point of being painful. It’s a wishlist of every school girl in 1950’s idea of happiness and wistful daydreams in the most stereotyped ways possible. There is a lot of French in the book but all read like the narrator stopped recording to listen to a language tape, practice 2-3 times and then returned to recording on Audible. It’s jarring, unnatural, and distracting.

Historia
Why are we scared of ghosts, zombies, vampires, demons, and monsters, when we know they are not real? Why do dark attics give us the creeps? How do writers and directors know exactly what anxieties to tap into, so that we break out in goosebumps, cover our eyes, and cringe? Shannon Scott invites you into the spooky, creepy, and sometimes surprising world of the horror genre to examine how popular scary movies and books manipulate our collective and individual fears—not only to frighten us, but also to address taboo subjects, and to reflect and comment on the state of our society.

As the days grow shorter and the temperature drops, Halloween approaches. Come, brave listener, pull up a chair, and spend some time with master storyteller Stephen Fry as he tells us some of his favourite ghost stories of all time, in truly terrifying spatial audio. From the headless horseman of Sleepy Hollow to the tortured spirits of M.R. James, from Edgar Allan Poe’s terrifying tale of a doppelganger to Charlotte Riddell’s Open Door that should definitely stay shut, join Stephen as he tells you some truly terrifying tales.

Fabulous Narration
Revisado: 03-02-24
The legend of sleepy hollow begins this set of stories. It’s written in a very outdated way (needed massive editing). Stephen Fry’s excellent narration could not overcome what would now be considered bad writing. The rest of the stories get better and better. Definitely worth buying.

Historia
The city of Bulikov once wielded the powers of the gods to conquer the world, enslaving and brutalizing millions - until its divine protectors were killed. Now Bulikov has become just another colonial outpost of the world's new geopolitical power, but the surreal landscape of the city itself - first shaped, now shattered, by the thousands of miracles its guardians once worked upon it - stands as a constant, haunting reminder of its former supremacy. Into this broken city steps Shara Thivani.

Bad narrator, good book
Revisado: 02-29-24
Good story but the reader was very distracting. I like this authors other books better; recommend The Tainted Cup. The narrator sounded disengaged and like she didn’t care about the book which may have colored my feelings about it.

Historia
In Daretana’s greatest mansion, a high imperial officer lies dead—killed, to all appearances, when a tree erupted from his body. Even here at the Empire’s borders, where contagions abound and the blood of the leviathans works strange magical changes, it’s a death both terrifying and impossible. Assigned to investigate is Ana Dolabra, a detective whose reputation for brilliance is matched only by her eccentricities. Rumor has it that she wears a blindfold at all times, and that she can solve impossible cases without even stepping outside the walls of her home.

The story was unlike anything I had read in this genre. The characters were eccentric in an amusing and likable way. Very well crafted and difficult to stop listening to. I look forward to other books by this author.

Hosted by a rotating cast of seasoned comics, each episode covers a different American pastime, region, city, characteristic, or zeitgeist. The show opens with a host introduction, followed by a sound collage that features stand-up comedy, funny interviews with special guests and folks on the street, and even local music. It’s a hilarious (and sometimes touching) tribute to our complicated country.

Excellent companion for new and established artists
Revisado: 12-14-23
I’ve been a professional artist over four decades and served as a USIA Arts Ambassador (State Dept) teaching artists how to succeed as artists. This book includes everything I’ve ever passed along but includes music and writing. It’s a truthful dissertation on the power and responsibility we have with our creations .

Can literature change our real world society? At its foundation, utopian and dystopian fiction asks a few seemingly simple questions aimed at doing just that. Who are we as a society? Who do we want to be? Who are we afraid we might become? When these questions are framed in the speculative versions of Heaven and Hell on earth, you won't find easy answers, but you will find tremendously insightful and often entertaining perspectives.
