My daughters loved it!
Revisado: 02-14-24
This was a truly captivating story! My 9 year old twins loved the story. At time it was more violent than I expected but not graphic. Wonderful story about conquering fears.

The ultimate oxymoron
Revisado: 03-03-23
Fascinating and disturbing all in one. In this book, the US military is accomplished and destructive. This book is quite the juxtaposition.

Captivating for my daughters and me. The concept of bookwanering let to several great conversations about books we have previously read. I look forward to sharing the series with my daughters.

Historia
Long before Hank Crawford arrived in the waters of Ketchikan, his partners and compatriots were already in love with its shores. Following the final, crushing moments of World War II, Japanese officer Kiyoshi Tsurifune, Sergeant Jones Henry, and Resistance fighter Swede Scorden struggle to regain normalcy and any contact with the shimmering, fish-filled sea. Lost honor, fallen friends, their cultural identities gone in the wake of a nuclear blast - these fishermen-turned-soldiers have a long way to go till they regain the waters in which they feel most at home.

Just wow!
Revisado: 12-12-22
I can’t wait to listen to the following trilogy. The way McCloskey intertwined the main characters and shared the post war history was fascinating.
The narrator was spot on with the characters voices.

A killer is on the loose in the Arizona Territory. One by one, Tonto Basin ranchers are being murdered for their livestock - and the Cattle Raisers' Association has hired two range detectives to catch the culprit. From the looks of them, Stovepipe Stewart and Wilbur Coleman are just another pair of high-plains drifters. But with their razor-sharp detective skills and rare talent for trouble, they're the last remaining hope for one young cowboy who's been arrested for the murders. Stovepipe and Wilbur believe the boy is innocent.

The Narrator had a wide range of voices.
Revisado: 12-09-22
The narrator had a wide range of voices. I enjoyed the voice he used for narration. The voice of one main character reminded me of John Wayne. How ever his choice of voice for the main character’s side kick was annoying and did not fit the character well. The voice made the side kick sound weak and feeble.

Historia
Outsourcing and a trim corporate profile enabled Coke to scale up production of a low-price beverage and realize huge profits. But the costs shed by Coke have fallen on the public at large. Coke now uses an annual 79 billion gallons of water, an increasingly precious global resource, and its reliance on corn syrup has helped fuel our obesity crisis. Bartow J. Elmore explores Coke through its ingredients, showing how the company secured massive quantities of coca leaf, caffeine, sugar, and other inputs.

Really opinionated
Revisado: 11-02-22
The book’s negative opinion of Coke and capitalism in general reverberates through this book to academic bankruptcy. Much like my review Citizen Coke sounds predetermined to demonize Coke corporation. The constant use of highly opinionated adjectives detracted from the book.

Historia
No one captures the complexities of Appalachia - a rugged, brutal landscape of exquisite beauty - as evocatively and indelibly as author and poet Ron Rash. Winner of the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, two O Henry prizes, and a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award, Rash brilliantly illuminates the tensions between the traditional and the modern, the old and new south, tenderness and violence, man and nature.

A strong connection to place.
Revisado: 07-31-20
Growing up on the South Cumberland Plateau, the stories connected to my rural surroundings, friends and family. Powerful writing deeply rooted in the Southern Appalachian Mountains.
At first the narrator’s accent grated at me as does the Mountain accents of my home do. The more I listened the accent and pace of narration added to the stories and gave characters greater depth.

Historia
Eighteen-year-old Robert Weekes is a practitioner of empirical philosophy - an arcane, female-dominated branch of science used to summon the wind, shape clouds of smoke, heal the injured, and even fly. Though he dreams of fighting in the Great War as the first male in the elite US Sigilry Corps Rescue and Evacuation Service - a team of flying medics - Robert is resigned to mixing batches of philosophical chemicals and keeping the books for the family business in rural Montana, where his mother, a former soldier and vigilante, aids the locals.

Historia
When editor Susan Ryeland is given the manuscript of Alan Conway's latest novel, she has no reason to think it will be much different from any of his others. After working with the best-selling crime writer for years, she's intimately familiar with his detective, Atticus Pünd, who solves mysteries disturbing sleepy English villages. An homage to queens of classic British crime such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, Alan's traditional formula has proved hugely successful.
