This podcast is super smart, but fun! Fascinating stories, great hosts. Can’t wait for the next episode.

To me, BLOCK SEVENTEEN exemplifies how we are the unreliable narrators of our own memories… but that says nothing about our ability to discover truths. Akiko ‘’Jane’’ Thompson is an unemployed, thirtysomething, half-Japanese/half-Caucasian woman living in the San Francisco Bay area in 2011 who sets out to solve a series of confounding mysteries—some almost mythically tied to the rarely-spoken-of generational pain spawned from her family’s suffering in US Japanese Internment camps during WWII. It’s in the unraveling of painful family histories, in confronting disappointing personal relationships, and in the struggle to separate fact from fiction in the ‘’news’’ of the present that Jane’s story emerges.

and a rock god babysitter.

This story did not go where I expected it would when I first started listening. These punk band wannabe, Lower-East-Side social dropouts are far from stereotypical misanthropes. In fact, they’re not misanthropes at all, they’re kind and thoughtful and really uncool at heart. And while I would have openly welcomed a straightforward Gen-X take on things like 9/11 and Trump, it’s not that either. There’s a lot of nuance, and some truly inspired perspective coming from the Baby Boomer and Millennial characters too (something that narrator Eileen Stevens captures perfectly!). It’s multigenerational and sweeping, but at the same time super focused on this one small group of characters—a story about a family making its way in the world that reflects the recent past and present day in a totally fresh way.

With its quick description as "a feminist thriller for the #MeToo era," Whisper Network was bound to create buzz, and I must say that in this case that buzz is very well deserved (great pick, Reese!). While there is some very bad behavior going on and plenty of justified rage, what makes this the perfect summer listen is its simultaneous lightness. Narrator Almarie Guerra's performance is a masterwork in capturing the nuanced differences between each character. It's a twisted tale full of people and situations you love to hate and hate to love, it's a little campy, and even the women are kind of terrible, but I could not get enough of their entangled stories and could barely wait to find out what happens in the end. My advice: control yourself, maybe listen at 1.25 speed, but be patient and wait for it!

Vivian Morris is a 95-year-old woman who looks back on her youthful indiscretions with zero regrets. Zero. From the time she arrived at her Aunt Peg's rundown Manhattan theater at age nineteen, escaping the rigor and elitism of 1940's Vassar, Vivian enthusiastically sought out the kind of life lessons best taught by show girls. She considered those years of youthful hedonism as the best of her life—living with intent and absolutely no shame—and (almost surprisingly) she was not destroyed by it. Narrator Blair Brown's performance is amazing. She captures the spirit of this dauntless NYC woman and a place and time forever immortalized in Gilbert's glittery prose.

Author David Hewson is behind some of my favorite "audio-first" projects like Macbeth: A Novel and Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Novel in which he and co-creator A. J. Hartley brilliantly re-imagined two of Shakespeare's classics. Last Seen Wearing is something quite different and is even more audio-centric. Here, Hewson, in this full-cast production, takes on NYC with a crime story unlike anything else you've listened to. If you're a fan of TV shows featuring cops, PI's, and detectives you'll want to check this one out. Warning: If listening while driving, take care to ignore random sirens and car horns—you're not (likely) getting pulled over by the fuzz or being tailgated by an 18-wheeler.

I've finally discovered Kevin Wilson and will diving into his backlist for sure! Having fallen for Marin Ireland's narration in Beartown (Fredrik Backman) I was immediately drawn to trying out more of her performances (fingers crossed that her audiobook resume will continue to grow). I adore her, and she is just too perfect for this quirky, heartfelt story filled with a wonderfully authentic cast of characters. The fact that there are children who spontaneously burst into flames (or occasionally more subtlety smolder if only slightly agitated) somehow only adds to its realness. You will care deeply for these people--you will laugh and you may cry. I did all of these things and I'm left with the overwhelming sense of satisfaction found in experiencing a story that is both entertaining and moving--the joy of time well-spent. 😊

Okay. I'm ready for Halloween now. This oddly dark and sweet story has completely captivated me and set me in the right frame of mind to fully appreciate this witchy, haunted season—the kind of genre-stretching reset I recommend to everyone. Ghostlove is not horror. Sure, there's creepiness—but it's not cringe-worthy. It actually hit a very child-like part of me that still exists but often needs a nudge: the ability to fully and openly suspend disbelief. I say, just go with it. Let yourself fall in love with these ghosts and dead people and lose yourself in the strange hallways and creaky floorboards of your mind. Get swept up in this spellbinding multi-cast performance and let your imagination be recharged.

Ceridwen Dovey is what many would call a, "writer’s writer." Her novels and her journalism have appeared on many a literary short list and best-of round-up. Her latest, Life After Truth, follows five close friends over a Harvard College reunion weekend fifteen years after graduation. When the class’s most reviled alumnus ends up murdered, the friends are forced to look at themselves, and each other, in a whole new light. Let the soul-searching begin. Whether Covey is new to you or a name you know, now is the time to experience her special gift of storytelling as an Audible-first production. You can listen now, and watch for the print version coming in the fall of 2020.
