Historia
Nesta Archeron has always been prickly-proud, swift to anger, and slow to forgive. And ever since being forced into the Cauldron and becoming High Fae against her will, she's struggled to find a place for herself within the strange, deadly world she inhabits. Against the sweeping backdrop of a world seared by war and plagued with uncertainty, Nesta and Cassian battle monsters from within and without as they search for acceptance - and healing - in each other's arms.

I can't stand any of these characters anymore
Revisado: 05-20-24
First of all, just be aware that the main storyline ended in book 3. Book 4 is a very skipable novella and this one follows Nesta.
Second of all, this is utterly awful.
I still have 4.5 hours left in this and I've given up. These characters are psychotic. I genuinely can't believe that this entire storyline made it through an editorial process. It's just... awful.
The only "plot" so far has been this weird ritual humiliation/punishment arc which is supposed to help Nesta get over her grief and addition issues?? It's bizarre. I'm just really glad I live in a world where SJM is a writer and not a mental health professional.
There's also some really messed up parts in relation to withholding information about a woman's pregnancy from that woman (not a spoiler, you find out this information simultaneously). Now if that part had been written as a horrible bad thing that was done to the pregnant woman, I would be ok with it. But its not. It's written as if it's some sort of completely understandable sweet protective thing. Which made me kind of sick.

ASMR narration warning
Revisado: 04-03-24
Saskia Butler is obviously a really talented voice artist. The characters are great and the performance is great. But - and this is very much a me thing - there is so much dry mouth sounds happening that I can't stand listening to this book. I tried to come back to it so many times but I just can't stand it.
So if you're like me and you just can't stomach ASMR-y type mouth sounds, maybe steer clear of this one. I finished this on kindle and enjoyed the story a lot more that way.
Story wise, it's good! Not quite up there with the first trilogy but better than the Mad Ships. I wish there was more tie in with the other books in the universe though. I thought we were going to get more storylines colliding but so far it's very much a separate narrative.

Annoying obnoxious main character
Revisado: 11-22-23
The premise is still interesting but the characters just fall off a cliff after the first book.
Persephone spends the entire story in a series of bratty emotional outbursts, snapping at people, slamming doors, overreacting to everything that happens around her and behaving like a spoilt 12 year old. Everyone around her is ridiculously understanding of her awful behaviour because she's apparently SO wonderful - such a great friend/girlfriend/employee - even though she treats everyone around her like crap and no one really calls her out.
Also the amount of "stretching" mentioned in the steamy scenes is...a little offputting.

It's a truth that 17-year-old clock mechanic Danny Hart knows all too well; his father has been trapped in a Stopped town east of London for three years. Unique worldbuilding & realistic characters
Revisado: 01-23-23
A little slow but wonderful! It builds up quietly so that when the action starts you're properly invested. Imperfect characters with subtle emotions and realistic responses - it's a nice change from the melodramatic "fiery" characters in 90% of fantasy books!

Historia
I was my dad's vinyl-wallah: I changed his records while he lounged around, and that's how I know my Argo from my Tempo. And it's why, when Dr Walid called me to the morgue to listen to a corpse, I recognised the tune it was playing. Something violently supernatural had happened to the victim, strong enough to leave its imprint like a wax cylinder recording.

Great story, amazing narration
Revisado: 08-07-22
Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is an amazing narrator and I'd listen to him read a takeaway menu on repeat.
But really, it's a great series. I'm not usually into this genre but I got recommended this so often I gave it a shot and I'm so glad I did!
Imperfect characters with great depth and just the right touch of grit and realism without becoming gore-fetish. The worldbuilding is great and the storyline stays enagaging and fresh even after 9 books which is pretty impressive.
It's one of those books that can just really sink into completely and get comfortably lost. 100% recommend.

Ok but later books get VERY repetitive!
Revisado: 08-07-22
The first book is good. The world is interesting and there seems like a few nice plot lines.
But as the series goes on the same details and descriptions get repeated over and over again until you find yourself metally yelling "I KNOW ABOUT THE DAMN BREATHING THING! YOU'VE MENTIONED IT 50 TIMES ALREADY!"
Besides the over explanation, its fine. Cool universe, interesting idea and great narration but just not very engaging.
