Historia
Little River, New York, 1994: April Sawicki is living in a motorless motorhome that her father won in a poker game. Failing out of school, picking up shifts at a local diner, she’s left fending for herself in a town where she’s never quite felt at home. When she “borrows” her neighbor’s car to perform at an open mic night, she realizes her life could be much bigger than where she came from. After a fight with her dad, April packs her stuff and leaves for good, setting off on a journey to find a life that’s all hers.

This Book Was Very Relaxing.
Revisado: 04-16-23
Half way through I was tempted to stop listening to this book. I’m so glad I didn’t. The narration was good, & the storyline started out slow, but there were many lessons to be learned, following April on her journey. When I sat down to listen in the evenings, it was always so relaxing to catch up with her. I definitely recommend this book. ThankYou.

I learned what I needed to know in the first chapter. The more I listened, the more depressed I became. I think the book’s contents should be read in the company of a therapist. It was impossible to discern between *Is this information about me or my parents? What difference does it make, & what does it all matter?* I don’t recommend this book, if you already struggle with depression. ThankYou.

Historia
A Chance to Die is a vibrant portrayal of Amy Carmichael, an Irish missionary and writer who spent 53 years in South India without furlough. There she became known as "Amma", or "mother", as she founded the Dohnavur Fellowship, a refuge for underprivileged children. Amy's life of obedience and courage stands as a model for all who claim the name of Christ. Bringing Amma to life in a compelling biographical narrative, Elisabeth Elliot urges listeners to examine the depths of their own commitment to Christ.

I’ve waited decades to be able to listen to this book, as my eyesight isn’t so good anymore. Amy’s story is remarkable. Her Love for the Lord, as well as for people was contagious. I Loved this book. Now Amy & Elizabeth are together with Jesus. My only disappointment was with the narrator. Very robotic, & many times I had to rewind. I definitely recommend this book, as well as anything else Amy or Elizabeth has written. ThankYou.

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Even though it seemed to slow down to a crawl in some places, I’m glad I finished the book. Kya was very resourceful & took very good care of herself. Which I found to be amazing. I don’t want to give the story away, but there were definitely parts that didn’t add up, or seemed pretty impossible. The chapter layout was simple but genius & I’m going to recommend this book to my Daughters.

Historia
In present-day California, Eleanor Bennett’s death leaves behind a puzzling inheritance for her two children, Byron and Benny: a black cake, made from a family recipe with a long history, and a voice recording. In her message, Eleanor shares a tumultuous story about a headstrong young swimmer who escapes her island home under suspicion of murder. The heartbreaking tale Eleanor unfolds, the secrets she still holds back, and the mystery of a long-lost child challenge everything the siblings thought they knew about their lineage and themselves.

I’ve never read or listened to a book like this before. I appreciated the historical facts weaved throughout the story, & I enjoyed getting to know the many characters. The author’s creativity really encouraged me to finish the book I’m writing as well. The only thing I found to be disappointing, was the way the book seemed to drag along ever so slowly. At times I was tempted to stop listening to the book completely. But, I’m so glad I soldiered through to the end. I absolutely loved the “Author’s Note” at the end of the book. ThankYou.

Historia
Elise Sontag is a typical Iowa 14-year-old in 1943 - aware of the war but distanced from its reach. Then her father, a legal US resident for nearly two decades, is suddenly arrested on suspicion of being a Nazi sympathizer. The family is sent to an internment camp in Texas, where behind the armed guards and barbed wire, Elise feels stripped of everything beloved and familiar, including her own identity. The only thing that makes the camp bearable is meeting fellow internee Mariko Inoue, a Japanese-American teen from Los Angeles.

I Love a Good Historical Narrative!
Revisado: 05-11-22
This book was captivating from beginning to end. The historical information was accurate & made personal by the author. My Mom was about the same age as Elise Sontag, during WW2, growing up in Greece. So much of what I learned listening to this book, I wasn’t taught in school. Fascinating! I’ll definitely listen to this book again, & I’ll recommend to my Grandchildren.

Historia
Fat is an obsession, a dirty word, a subject of national handwringing - and, according to biochemist Sylvia Tara, the least understood part of our body. You may not love your fat, but your body certainly does. In fact your body is actually endowed with many self-defense measures to hold on to fat. For example, fat can use stem cells to regenerate; increase our appetite if it feels threatened; and use bacteria, genetics, and viruses to expand itself. The secret to losing 20 pounds? You have to work with your fat, not against it.

Disappointed.
Revisado: 01-14-22
I originally chose this audiobook, because I had hoped I could learn about the Bernese Mountain Dog breed. The book was helpful with that. I had also hoped to be able to share it with my Grandchildren. However, parts of the story line & foul language, made it impossible for me to recommend to anyone. Unfortunate.

Beautiful, Brilliant & Real Life.
Revisado: 10-09-21
I was so pleasantly surprised! I came across this book, after reading “How to Trap a Tiger” - by the same author. I have battled depression for decades, but I’ve never listened to an audiobook that included depression in it’s pages. The story not only encouraged my heart, but it also gave me the rare opportunity to visit & experience how life might have been for my four children, when they were younger. Wow! I can’t Thank You enough, Tae Keller, for tackling the complicated reality of depression & for sharing NAMI’s valuable information at the end of the book. ThankYou so very much.
