Historia
You were born influential. But then you were taught to suppress that power, to follow the rules, to wait your turn, to not make waves. Award-winning Yale professor Zoe Chance will show you how to rediscover the superpower that brings great ideas to life. Influence doesn’t work the way you think because you don’t think the way you think. Move past common misconceptions—such as the idea that asking for more will make people dislike you—and understand why your go-to negotiation strategies are probably making you less influential.

Zoe Chance knits together tools, techniques, wise advice, and memorable, inspiring stories to make this one of the more useful, and probably the most fun personal improvement book I’ve ever read. Her guidance and fervent hope that we all use these techniques to make the world a safer, more just, sustainable, and joyful place suffuses the book.

Historia
The world-renowned philosopher and author of the best-selling Justice explores the central question of our time: What has become of the common good? World-renowned philosopher Michael J. Sandel argues that to overcome the crises that are upending our world, we must rethink the attitudes toward success and failure that have accompanied globalization and rising inequality. Sandel shows the hubris a meritocracy generates among the winners and the harsh judgment it imposes on those left behind, and traces the dire consequences across a wide swath of American life.

Revelatory.
Revisado: 01-25-21
This book holds deep explanatory power for the recent and current US political situation. And it casts a challenge worthy of generations to address: how to build a just society. I had not realized before how bought in I was to the idea of a meritocracy, nor how unjust such a system is. Put this at the top of your reading list and share widely.

White Fragility

Historia
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

Historia
"We were eight years in power" was the lament of Reconstruction-era Black politicians as the American experiment in multiracial democracy ended with the return of white supremacist rule in the South. Now Ta-Nehisi Coates explores the tragic echoes of that history in our own time: the unprecedented election of a Black president followed by a vicious backlash that fueled the election of the man Coates argues is America's "first White president".

Historia
Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

Historia
Talking about race means naming the reality of white privilege and hierarchy. How do we talk about race honestly, then, without making our children feel bad about being white? Most importantly, how do we do any of this in age-appropriate ways? While a great deal of public discussion exists in regard to the impact of race and racism on children of color, meaningful dialogue about and resources for understanding the impact of race on white children are woefully absent. Raising White Kids steps into that void.

Winslet's performance is too dynamic
Revisado: 07-05-17
We love this story. And Kate Winslet expresses the character's voices and the feel and pacing of the story beautifully. I expect Dahl would be pleased. However, the volume and tone of her voice vary so widely that we were constantly turning the volume up or down as we listened with our kids on the road. Sometimes she nearly whispered while other times she shouted. It's entirely appropriate for the story, but perhaps the sound engineers could normalize the volume so listeners do not need to. But thank you for a wonderful book and performance.
