Refreshingly Vulnerable…Katie Really Does “Go There”
Revisado: 07-23-22
I really enjoyed getting to know more about Katie’s life behind the scenes, and the walk down memory lane, as I thought about where I was, and what was going on in my own life during the world events Katie recounts here. Shed tears in several places, both happy and sad. Biographies are my jam, and this one rates highly on my list.

Historia
In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian-American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food.

Crying in my Sewing Room
Revisado: 06-17-21
I heard about this book on the Today Show. The title grabbed my attention, as I love me some H Mart and have even shed some tears there, smelling familiar smells that brought me back to places I longed for. There were so many things I related to in the story, even though I haven’t had the exact same experiences as the author. She paints such vivid pictures, I felt like I was eating what she described. I was completely swept up in her relationship with her mom...talk about a tear jerker! I couldn’t stop listening, and found myself carrying my phone around with me everywhere...even the shower. SO well done.

Historia
On The Power of Vulnerability, Dr. Brown offers an invitation and a promise - that when we dare to drop the armor that protects us from feeling vulnerable, we open ourselves to the experiences that bring purpose and meaning to our lives. Here she dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and reveals that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage.

Will listen again and again
Revisado: 05-09-19
SO motivational! I didn’t know if I’d be happy about using a credit for this, since it was more like a live seminar than a book...but it was SO worth it! I know I will listen to it many times to make sure not to miss a thing. I’m already thinking I’d like to do a virtual family book club featuring it with our grown children.

In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites listeners into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her - from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work to her time spent at the world's most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it - in her own words and on her own terms.

Surprisingly Relatable
Revisado: 03-24-19
I love biographies...of people similar to me, and also those who I don’t think I’d have anything in common with. I didn’t go into this one expecting to find so much of it to be so relatable, but it really was. Michelle is an exceptional person, with lessons to teach through her life experiences. More than her world-class, globe-trotting adventures...I found myself envying her family and upbringing. (Also, she has a fantastic reading voice. Very enjoyable to listen to.)

Historia
The first full-length biography of Fred Rogers, The Good Neighbor tells the story of this utterly unique and enduring American icon. Drawing on original interviews, oral histories, and archival documents, Maxwell King traces Rogers’s personal, professional, and artistic life through decades of work, including a surprising decision to walk away from the show to make television for adults, only to return to the neighborhood with increasingly sophisticated episodes, written in collaboration with experts on childhood development.

Didn’t realize how much I needed this in my life...
Revisado: 03-15-19
I’m so sad it’s over. Such a great read. I always knew we’d lost a national treasure with Fred’s passing...but had never contemplated what a deep loss it had to be to those closest to him. What an amazing friend, husband, and father he was. His loyalty and devotion were rare in this world.
Overall, it was a joy to listen to LeVar read, but there were a couple of voices he shouldn’t have attempted. If you ever meet him at a party, don’t ask him to do “old Canadian man.” You’ll be trying to scratch your ears off, trust me.

Historia
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Left Me Feeling Confused
Revisado: 02-26-19
The writing was gorgeously descriptive, but the ending of the story seemed pointless to me. Unless the pointlessness was the point? I don’t know. I really enjoyed the narration...and enjoyed being immersed in the story...especially as the storylines got closer to intersecting...but the ending was SO unsatisfying, I felt kind of robbed and wanted my sixteen hours back.

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

I wasn’t so sure about this one to begin with. It was difficult to listen to the cranky, monotone droning of Ove’s day to day frustrations. I’m so glad I stuck with it, though. It was an excellent read. Ove actually reminded me of a couple of grumpy old men in my life, and the patient women who put up with them.

Great story (minus the language)
Revisado: 09-11-18
Unlike some others, I appreciated the great detail. My niece also went through a stem cell transplant (cancer) and ultimately did not make it. The descriptions of the transplant timeline, the emotions they all experienced, the support they received from family and friends...it all had me riveted. But every F bomb was like an assault to my ears and I wanted to stop listening every time. For this reason, I can’t recommend it to friends, which is a shame.
