I absolutely loved this story, and the production was beautiful. No questions that listening enhanced the experience.

Year of the Elephant is an excellent window into the history and society of Morocco. Serving as the perfect foil to the unfortunately-common Orientalist fantasies surrounding Morocco, the novella provides honest introspection so often lacking in works geared toward non-Moroccan readers. In Abouzeid’s writings, she manages to encapsulate a complex culture still working through the pains of post-colonial reality while tackling many of the many lingering issues brought on by this period. The novella, and other short stories, are absolutely mandatory reading for anyone interested in traveling to or living in Morocco.

I was born and raised in Kansas and have seen first-hand the destruction that Koch-sponsored economic policies bring to communities. My father is an educator and he fights budget cuts every single year brought about by politicians that are in the pockets of the Koch brothers. My mother is a small business owner, and I can say with confidence that the tax cuts given to businesses don’t do anything aside from paying for vacations and Christmas bonuses, which is a small reward for the decimation of government programs such as public education.

This book brings to light the disturbing and, quite frankly, disgusting practices and goals of the Koch brothers and other members of the 1% who seek to steal our democracy and undermine our government. I would heavily recommend spending the time to read this book, though I would suggest having a happier read to turn to when Dark Money is just too much to process!

Chamberlain opted to translate the names of the deities as opposed to keeping the original names, and I wish he hadn’t done that. He also referred to the underworld as Hades, which, while technically correct, shouldn’t be used when translating a non-Hellenistic religious text... But all in all, I enjoyed the read!

A Little History of the *Western* World

Though remarkably forward thinking for its time, this account of the world’s history is painfully Eurocentric. In his defense, Gombrich does take several excursions into the histories of the Middle East and Southeast Asia, especially in regards to religious history, but his coverage of Africa, Asia outside of Japan and China, and the Americas is virtually nonexistent to the point that “History of the World” is a stretch.

I must concede, however, that Gombrich’s attempt at a simplified history that is accessible to younger readers is laudable. At times, he oversimplifies episodes of history which comes at the detriment of a broader understanding of historical significance, but I would strongly recommend this book to young historians looking to gain a simple understanding of world history, readers interested in the historical backdrop of the Western humanities, and those who wish to straighten out the chronology of Europe’s history before an AP exam.
