This 20 hours went by so quickly....... shows how normal people can become evil due to ideology.... very relevant in the current climate of Race Marxism (Critical Race Theory).... society can degenerate and there is untold evil . bland banal evil cowing the population... narration is excellent with an interesting surname.

Historia
Critical race theory is one of the hottest and most controversial topics in the world today, but what is it, really? Rightly understood, critical race theory is a reinvention of an older, terrible idea, Marxism, using race "as the central construct for understanding inequality" in place of economic class. That is, critical race theory is race Marxism. The evidence of this claim is so overwhelming upon even casual examination that it is a shock that it isn't immediately plain to everyone who encounters it.

Historia
All too often, this brilliant novel of thwarted love and revenge miscarried has been read for its political implications. Now, a quarter century after The Joke was first published and several years after the collapse of the Soviet-imposed Czechoslovak regime, it becomes easier to put such implications into perspective in favour of valuing the book (and all Kundera's work) as what it truly is: great, stirring literature that sheds new light on the eternal themes of human existence.

Historia
Flat, fertile, and fatally tempting to invaders, for centuries Ukraine was fought over by more powerful neighbours. Though its modern national movement dates back to the early nineteenth century, it did not win real independence until 1991. In 2014 mass demonstrations forced out a corrupt pro-Russian president. Russia responded by invading, first seizing Crimea and the eastern Donbass, and then in February 2022 marching on Kyiv. With Western help, Ukraine is fighting back. But in what form it will emerge from the war - the bloodiest in Europe since 1945 - remains to be seen.

First half is ok but second half should be neutral
Revisado: 02-05-23
First half is ok but the second half is a generic western biased propaganda narrative, no mention of documented far right groups infiltrating elements of Ukrainian government and military. No mention of the Wolfovitz doctrine or nefarious activities of Victoria Nuland and company. Delivery is clear but quirky in what the author / reader may regard as an exclusive high status accent. I still enjoyed it as it is a nice summary in the first half and insightful of the author's social circle's perceptions in the second half. A murderous Russians soldier is decribed a 'runtish, dim, pathetic', not sure she would have used this language if the guy was female so seems to be emotionally self indulgent when she thinks she won't be called out for it. He was being jailed for murder, not for failing to arouse the author. Also she forgets the civilians killed by Ukainian shelling in the Donbass from 2014-2022. Just because the Russians have done bad things, we should not be expected to think this makes the Ukrainians good.

Historia
The True Believer is a classic study on the rise and spread of mass movements along with a psychological profile of the fanatics who drive these violent political and social upheavals. Although the political landscape of 1951 is far different from that of the present era, Eric Hoffer's book has nevertheless provided us with remarkable descriptions that fit the kinds of people who join various extremist mass movements today. It is a terrifying portrait of the mind of the fanatic.

A vital classic in the current world
Revisado: 12-15-22
This book is almost urgently important in the modern world where there are fewer and fewer people who have first hand experience of the totalitarian idiologies in the 20th Century and the misery it spread........ a classic and inciteful book with obervastions of the true believer's actions and motivations, an aspect of human nature that may help you to understand how geopolitics in the world around us may develop.

Maps have a mysterious hold over us. Whether ancient, crumbling parchments or generated by Google, maps tell us things we want to know, not only about our current location or where we are going but about the world in general. And yet, when it comes to geo-politics, much of what we are told is generated by analysts and other experts who have neglected to refer to a map of the place in question.

Historia
What explains the spreading backlash against the global elite? In this revelatory investigation, Anand Giridharadas takes us into the inner sanctums of a new gilded age, showing how the elite follow a 'win-win' logic, fighting for equality and justice any way they can - except ways that threaten their position at the top. But why should our gravest problems be solved by consultancies, technology companies and corporate-sponsored charities instead of public institutions and elected officials? Why should we rely on scraps from the winners?

Repetitive and narrow minded
Revisado: 12-31-19
Some elements of his ideas are of course universal like equal opportunity for all and that billionaires are biased and live in a bubble. However claiming Trump is a racist or white supremacist as he is against illegal immigration is self indulgent adolescent narcissism. The author is as biased as a news anchor and the premise of the book is spread too thinly over too many chapters. I think billionaire philanthropy being an ironic contradiction in terms was probably already obvious to most people. Good to listen to if you want to hear what the 'woke' think, and increasing opportunities for middle and working class Americans is something I think most people agree on.

Fantastic
Revisado: 05-09-19
Ben provides a clear analysis of how our Western culture did not develop in a vacuum but draws on ancient heritage going back to Athens and Jerusalem. How those who reject this heritage are often the unknowing beneficiaries of it and how some new philosophies that reject our heritage are never the less hugely influenced by it. Very enlightening , great references to philosophers to look up, good observations of current trends in social science and culture wars in the USA. 5 stars.
