Very good story, if a bit convoluted and perhaps too long. Overall it’s an entertaining story with both likable and detestable characters.

Pelosi helped so many Americans and we must appreciate her hard work and devotion. She’s more superwoman than I knew.

The only fault I find with her time in office is that the Bush administration got away with lying to the American people for the benefit of a few corporations and individuals. That administration was all about the oil and weapons industries. Bush and Cheney got away with literal murder. I hope they have a conscious and suffer for what they did. The world would be a better place had they not been in office.

This novel begins and develops slowly and I was restless for chapters upon chapters for the story to get to the point before I began to appreciate the excellent writing and recognize the appreciations of mother nature, literature, architecture and people I shared with the characters and obviously with the author. I was fortunately drawn in by the excellent performance and kept listening when I became irritated with complications in mother daughter relationships (Why don’t more people have better emotional intelligence?). I was teetering on edge trying the mystery of what had happened to a mother and her children. In the end, the story was satisfying so, I recommend that you listen, hang in there and wait for it.

I so enjoyed this audiobook. President Obama wove the experiences of his presidency in with family life and friendships with excellence making the story much richer while exposing his true self. I could visualize the scenes and appreciate the tension over decisions. At the same time, I could sense his sureness of purpose as well as his swagger. He is the coolest of presidents. I heard mention of Michelle teasing about playing the book on 1.5 speed, however I didn’t experience any pausing as he performed the book. Sometimes I had to replay as he read a bit fast. I don’t usually listen to a book twice, but I will this one while I wait for his next. “Becoming” was also excellent, but it has nothing on “A Promised Land”. Highly recommend this book.

Straightforward stories of the experiences of a “stone catching” attorney determined to bring fairness and humanity to our truly broken justice system. Stone catching is a biblical reference of those who are without sin to cast the first stones.

The author weaves the stories of people society has failed and his own life experiences with touching grace and without contrivances. In spite of great sadness in the lives of his clients, Stevenson leaves the listener/reader with hope that Dr. King was right about the arc of the moral universe. In view of recent awakening of American consciousness, this book is a must “read”. I appreciated hearing the author’s voice.

There is no doubt that the author is a good story teller and is adept at details that bring life to a character. However, this story was dreary and depressing and focused mostly on all the ills that civilization attempts to overcome. I purchased this book because I enjoyed Frances McDormand's "Olive Kittridge", not because of the Oprah recommendation. It puzzles me why Oprah's selections are mostly about dysfunction.

For me to recommend fiction, there must be something redeeming in the story. I cannot point to anything uplifting in this one. I can recommend the performance. Farr did a good job.

I listen to at least one book a week and some I cannot finish others are not compelling enough to keep me engrossed. This story and performance is wonderful. The characters become alive, as you are taken on a roller coaster of emotions. The main characters slowly develop into heroes and the ending is truly satisfying. Loved it.

There is a divide between people of different races, incomes and social class. Recognition of a difference does not have to come with an assumption that because someone is different they are then not equal. At some point we must be willing to celebrate differences while understanding we are all equal... not better than or less than. The US is rich in culture as the result of so many coming together... not to meld into one culture but to appreciate what the differences add to our American experience. I see this as a YA novel given the narrator is a teen. The performance is amazing.

First of all, the performance is wonderful. I often felt that I was in a phone conversation with a friend who would occasionally be interrupted by her children. Eventually, I settled down into the rhythm of the story as a monologue told somewhat dispassionately in spite of the horror eventually conveyed. The storyteller shares (and I'm paraphrasing): "as you listen, realize this is not happening now, nor is it happening to you...” Is this statement meant to calm the listener or to set them on edge?
Also noteworthy, is that this story is timely, given the #me too movement and it invokes a certain amount of introspection. How well do we really know another person, even a spouse? It is easy to dismiss threats from people you think you know.
Bravo to the author for the creativity, the writing and the choice of performer.

Bourdain was a non-conformist, a maverick and wanted you to know it. He had a love/hate relationship with his chosen profession, but never seriously tried to leave it. Was it an addiction? He definitely had strong opinions and shared them freely. I learned a lot about restaurateurs, cooks, servers, suppliers and food. For example, I will never order or eat swordfish.

He openly shared his life and stories about his profession, some of which are a bit shocking, with no pretense. The fact that he also performed the book was a treat. He has a unique voice and style that brings the book alive and puts the listener in the kitchen with him. The book and his performance were both more poignant not just because he is no longer here, but because he took his own life. It seems to me he could best be described as a stoic. See if you agree.
