A fun cyberpunk-infused thriller
Revisado: 02-07-25
While I enjoyed Daniel's first two books, he was still trying to find his feet as an author. This book, however, showed me that he learned a lot and applied those lessons skillfully. I had little to no issues and found the story highly enjoyable. His main female lead was allowed to be feminine and used "wear" to give her the various tools she needed to skillfully execute her profession. This struck a fine balance that I believe many authors miss when they try to create a strong female character. I loved the interaction between the cast of characters he created, who all had their own unique voice and didn't feel like slight alterations of each other. The story was compelling and the world felt full with depth. There is a lot going on in the cyberpunk-infused thriller and I can't wait to see what Daniel has in store.

I need book 2!
Revisado: 06-06-24
I listened to the audiobook version and let me just start by saying it's one of the best I've heard. The different character voices, relaying the emotion of scenes, and the immersive audio effects were top notch!
As for the story, wow. A unique set of characters that clearly had their own motivations and outlooks on life. Each plot point felt earned and the conclusion has you on the edge of your seat. The writing style was also very pleasant with consistent peppering of phrases that made me pause and smile at how at how creative they were.
Overall, a must read first entry for any lover of sci-fi and good stories in general. A part of me wanted to geek out more on the science of things, but the soft sci-fi setting complimented the narrative nicely.

Historia
Accused of being the world breaker of an old prophecy by the elves, sought after by the ever-growing orc clans as vengeance against the elves, and desired by the human kings and queens for power, Aric will stop at nothing to protect his new dragon. It may be the only thing that can turn the tides of the war.

Excellent debut book
Revisado: 03-05-24
Corey Ratliff has created a very interesting world for us to explore. This is a great debut novel by any measure. It is well written with a great story and interesting characters. I appreciate the lore being paced over the course of the story in what felt like a very natural way. And the lore that we get in the later part of the book makes me anxious for the next book to figure out how this world came to be.
The audio performance could have been better. There is a decent amount of whispering and none of it is a stage whisper, which makes it difficult to catch the first time if you have the volume set at a reasonable level. There also was not enough variation for the female narration.
