Historia
In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

We read this in our book club
Revisado: 02-12-24
This book takes a look at a woman's memory of and telling of (to her curious daughters) her brief relationship with a man who later became wildly famous. It's so realistic from the perspective that many of us had that one person who was our kryptonite, the one you know you won't end up with but throw caution to the wind anyhow. But now your nosey young-adult daughters want all the details. I appreciated the story since it wasn't full of regret or shame or longing.....more like it happened, and it then we got on with our lives.

Historia
Before Owen Michaels disappears, he smuggles a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her. Despite her confusion and fear, Hannah Hall knows exactly to whom the note refers—Owen’s sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey. Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother. As Hannah’s increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered, as the FBI arrests Owen’s boss, as a US marshal and federal agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isn’t who he said he was.

Good book overall
Revisado: 04-26-22
I liked this book overall. However, the big reveal seems to happen in about one paragraph which I thought was very fast for how long and complex the writer made the lead up to it. The ending was a little unsatisfactory because it just seemed abrupt. This book reads more like a screenplay to me than a novel.

Historia
On a flight from London to Boston, Ted Severson meets the stunning and mysterious Lily Kintner. Sharing one too many martinis, the strangers begin to play a game of truth, revealing intimate details about themselves. Ted talks about his marriage that’s going stale and his wife, Miranda, who he’s sure is cheating on him. Ted and his wife were a mismatch from the start - he the rich businessman, she the artistic free spirit - a contrast that once inflamed their passion but has now become a cliché. But their game turns a little darker when Ted jokes that he could kill Miranda....

Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

Book Club Selection This Month
Revisado: 06-12-21
We read this as our selection of the month. I liked overall; however, I think "A Man Called Ove" written by the same author is better. Both books contain suicide (or attempted suicide) as a major element of the story..........makes me wonder if this writer has experienced something related to suicide??

This book is FANTASTIC!!!
Revisado: 04-19-21
Seriously, I loved this book!! It is witty and creative and thought-provoking. I think the personification of machinery has never been so spot on. I really think it asks the reader to be imaginative and open-minded while show-casing the elements of society which control people. I would've given this book 5 stars even if I never met the author........but Chris McCrudden actually came to our book club via ZOOM (he was in London, so it was the middle of the night) and entertained a lively and valuable discussion about this book and the next two in the series!!!! EEK.....now I shall award 7 stars!!!! Love, love, love this book!
