Historia
For the last five years, James and Deborah Fallows have been traveling across America in a single-engine prop airplane. Visiting dozens of towns, they have met hundreds of civic leaders, workers, immigrants, educators, environmentalists, artists, public servants, librarians, businesspeople, city planners, students, and entrepreneurs to take the pulse and understand the prospects of places that usually draw notice only after a disaster or during a political campaign. The America they saw is acutely conscious of its problems, but it is also crafting solutions.

Unbelievably pollyannaish
Revisado: 05-06-25
Like reading PR for these towns public private partnerships. No skepticism or pushback. Cant believe these are journalists at top American magazines. Also they’re so oblivious to the absurdity of them flying their plane to each of these places to interview and condescend about working class life

Historia
Things That Helped is a memoir in essays, detailing the Australian writer Jessica Friedmann's recovery from postpartum depression. In each essay, she focuses on a separate totemic object - from pho to red lips to the musician Anohni - to tell a story that is both deeply personal and culturally resonant. Drawing on critical theory, popular culture, and her own experience, Friedmann's wide-ranging essays touch on class, race, gender, and sexuality, as well as motherhood, creativity, and mental illness.

White guilt memoir. Not postpartum.
Revisado: 06-15-24
This is not a book about PPD. It’s a book for and about white people who want to agonize about privilege and race and shame — and not even eloquently.

Molly Roden Winter was a mother of small children with a husband, Stewart, who often worked late. One night when Stewart missed the kids’ bedtime—again—she stormed out of the house to clear her head. At a bar, she met Matt, a flirtatious younger man. When Molly told her husband that Matt had asked her out, she was surprised that Stewart encouraged her to accept.

A memoir of privilege and hot mess
Revisado: 02-02-24
Rich white people have sex. Some is juicy. Mostly it’s messy. They have so much money. They live happily ever after.
Great takes on polyamory. Admirably honest. But apparently having multiple lovers means having a part time job while your husband supports you, and paying for hotel rooms a lot. Sounds nice.

Historia
In A Woman Is a Woman Until She Is a Mother, Anna Prushinskaya explores the deep life shifts of pregnancy, birth, and motherhood in the United States, a world away from the author's Soviet homeland. Drawing from inspirations as various as midwife Ina May Gaskin, writer and activist Alice Walker, filmmaker Sophia Kruz, and frontierswoman Caroline Henderson, Prushinskaya captures the inherent togetherness of motherhood alongside its accompanying estrangement.

Historia
Beginning with her experience as a medical actor who was paid to act out symptoms for medical students to diagnose, Leslie Jamison's visceral and revealing essays ask essential questions about our basic understanding of others: How should we care about each other? How can we feel another's pain, especially when pain can be assumed, distorted, or performed? Is empathy a tool by which to test or even grade each other?

Cringe
Revisado: 01-23-24
Jamison’s entire project is to valorize rich white womens tears while awkwardly looking in on poor people of color. Managed to write multiple essays on prison without mentioning race or her own positionality. The last essay about how much we hate on women’s pain presumes that just writing about pain is valuable when in fact you maybe need to do something with it for it to count as art. She whines into the void.

Historia
A psychologist in suburban Cleveland, Dustin is drifting through his forties when he hears the news: His adopted brother, Rusty, is being released from prison. Thirty years ago, Rusty received a life sentence for the massacre of Dustin’s parents, aunt, and uncle. The trial came to epitomize the 1980s hysteria over Satanic cults; despite the lack of physical evidence, the jury believed the outlandish accusations Dustin and his cousin made against Rusty. Now, after DNA analysis has overturned the conviction, Dustin braces for a reckoning.

This book is so good
Revisado: 11-30-23
I read it in 2017 when it came out but just relistened. Fantastically performed. An absolute masterwork that uses the genre of the murder mystery to explore much deeper psychological terrain. Dark yet often quite funny. This book did not get enough love when it came out, nor does Dan Chaim’s work in general.

Would you listen to Understanding Japan again? Why?
A wonderful history course that weaves narrative and a big picture contemporary perspective together. I listened to this before coming to Japan for some work as a journalist and it was an awesome preparation. Thanks to Professor Ravina for a wonderful class.

Historia
No subject is bigger than reality itself, and nothing is more challenging to understand, since what counts as reality is undergoing continual revision and has been for centuries. The quest to pin down what's real and what's illusory is both philosophical and scientific, a metaphysical search for ultimate reality that goes back to the ancient Greeks. For the last 400 years, this search has been increasingly guided by scientists, who create theories and test them in order to define and redefine reality.

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge.

Yuck
Revisado: 09-29-14
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Yuck. This was a horribly written book full of cheap twists and weak characterization. I listened to it because I'd spent money on it and had to follow it through, but if this is what Americans want to read ... wow. God save us all.
Has Gone Girl turned you off from other books in this genre?
Absolutely.
