Historia
Set in Mississippi at the height of the Depression, this is the story of one family's struggle to maintain their integrity, pride, and independence in the face of racism and social injustice. And it is also Cassie's story - Cassie Logan, an independent girl who discovers over the course of an important year why having land of their own is so crucial to the Logan family, even as she learns to draw strength from her own sense of dignity and self-respect.

A story too valuable not too be told ...
Revisado: 12-29-18
My 11-year old son recommended I read this book, which he chose to read in a Battle of the Books competition in his middle school. We encourage his exploration through reading and the conversations that ensued from this were priceless as a family.
There is an absolute ugliness in racism, but when children learn about it in school it is an abstract idea, but a story like this one unravels the emotions, the human cost, and, perhaps most importantly, the sacrifices (big and small) that went into creating real change.
I recommend this book to families willing to talk about it afterward.

Historia
A reckoning with the persistence of evil in post-Civil War Atlanta. After leaving Atlanta in disgrace three years before, detective Thomas Canby is called back to the city on the eve of Atlanta's 1881 International Cotton Exposition to partner with Atlanta's first African American police officer, Cyrus Underwood. The case they're assigned is chilling: a serial murderer who seems to be violently targeting Atlanta's wealthiest black entrepreneurs. The killer's method is both strange and unusually gruesome.

Wow!!!!
Revisado: 12-24-18
This is not a story I would have chosen if I'd known more about it, but it was well worth the journey once begun. Some of the language was difficult to listen to and some of the imagery grotesquely vivid, but both were critical to the story's historical accuracy and not gratuitous in use.
The narrator's performance was superb.
All in all I would recommend this book, but know the period and that the themes are heavy ones. This book lead to great discussions.
