From bad to worse
Revisado: 04-20-25
Ugh...I can't take the psychotic ravings of the sister and the step-son. Fast forwarding completely over them, but there's still over 4 hours left and I don't know if I'll continue.
Well I didn't and it's a DNF. Straws that broke my back - Alister's reaction to her not telling him about her dementia - WTF? She doesn't owe you this information based on knowing you for five minutes. You do not have a right to her. What is it with men expecting to just automatically control women and having entrée into their whole lives and choices. And given the fact that he just wanted to have basically a fling, this is completely stupid and infuriating.
Secondly - she LETS the cops search her house? On what planet? How can any single person with access to TV allow this. I wouldn't do it ever - not my car, not my house - nowhere without a warrant. So completely stupid I had to stop. Ugh. So glad this was free.

Historia
Photographer Isla Wilson is thrilled she's landed her dream job, but the clients who hired her are getting stranger by the day. It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica. But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history. Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.

Wish it was more satisfying in the end
Revisado: 05-04-24
Not 100% terrible, but the two main plot lines come together too tangentially and is silly to have them both given that. Each one is wrapped up, but feels unsatisfying. Also, Isla makes too many dumb decisions and is fairly helpless a lot of the time. I guess some women are like that, but it's a little infuriating. The whole memory loss thing got to be a bit much - maybe that's why she was so dumb, she forgot how to be smart. And of course it's hiding a lot more than I really think a woman could forget. I found the romance with Alban at the end a bit gross.

Historia
Thespian sleuth Charles Paris is his own worst enemy, a louche lush who can resist anything except temptation - especially in the form of women and alcohol. Estranged from his long-suffering wife, Frances, his personal life is shambolic, and as an actor, he's C-list at best. But he does have a talent for solving murders - which is just as well, because wherever he goes, someone seems to drop dead.

Funnier than they are mysterious
Revisado: 01-30-24
While fun and laugh-out-loud funny at times, I found the mysteries/crimes themselves to be pretty shallow and uninvolving. The characters and situations (all ridiculous and involve a lot of falling and/or fire) are more the focus than is figuring out who done it. It wasn't a total bust, but I'm not going to get the second collection right away. Oh and Nighy does a brilliant drunk.

Is this going anywhere?
Revisado: 01-06-24
I wasn't sure about this one at first, it seemed to one-track and science-fiction-y, but then some character development crept in and it was better. Wish it hadn't ended the way it did because there is no resolution or answers. As a cliff-hanger it isn't obvious that the series will continue although I hope it does because this is a monumental waste of time without it.

A family is gunned down in the snow, but one of the children survives. Three years on, that child takes revenge, and the Snow Killer is born. But then, nothing - no further crimes are committed, and the case goes cold. 50 years later, has the urge to kill been reawakened? As murder follows murder, the detective team tasked with solving the crimes struggle with the lack of leads. It’s a race against time and the weather - each time it snows, another person dies.

Killers you almost understand
Revisado: 08-21-23
The gimmick is that we get a lot of narrative from the killer's POV and it continues into book two, so I liked this one enough to continue at least that far (and as of this writing have listened to four). Pretty much all the police officers are normal and none have axes to grind or bottles to get lost in the bottom of. The obstetrician visit felt way off though. As if some coworker that you barely know is going to come with you to get an ultrasound. Men hate dealing with women's plumbing except if they are plumbing them so that was a horribly false note.
The investigation ran smoothly and seemed logical - no big leaps although the connection between the new and old cases was accepted rather quickly in my view. I should have spotted what the snow killer narrative was hiding, but old habits and social mores really do blind us. The end had a lot more violence than I expected although none was very graphic.

A good story, performance & sound
Revisado: 08-19-23
If you followed the Welcome to Nightvale podcast, you’ll recognize the name Joseph Fink. Back when people still listened to Podcasts on actual iPods, I tried listening to it, but wasn’t for me and I had no idea until I read the details that this series is by the same person, but isn't directly connected to the Nightvale series. It being one of the freebies with my Audible subscription, I gave it a go and I’m glad I did.
Mostly it’s a radio drama, but is relatively light on foley and music. There is a bit of both, but they are subdued parts of the fabric of sound. In addition to the two main characters, there is also a narrator who fills in detail as it relates to off stage doings and general information about the California of the time. It reminds me strongly of the way Chandler gave Philip Marlowe similar thoughts as an internal monologue. Sometimes they are a bit too editorial, but they serve a purpose.
Our two main “detectives” are fun and suit each other in an odd way. Molly’s voice is so high pitched that I had a hard time picturing her as a recovering alcoholic and divorcee - she just sounds so young and idealistic as opposed to older and jaded. That’s the voice Lu has for sure. Old and jaded and although beaten up by life, still full of purpose and hope. I liked the way the investigation unfolded and the women’s relationship cemented itself. The mystery is many-layered and everything connects, a thing I quite enjoy about mysteries. What I didn’t love so much is the ending - it’s a bit of a cliff hanger and if there isn’t at least one more season, it’s going to be a bummer. I’d prefer the ending to be finished and leaving me with some sort of completion.

Historia
There's a serial killer targeting the streets of Newcastle, seemingly picking his victims at random but subjecting them all to the same torturous end. When the Chief Inspector on the case goes missing, it falls on DCI Ryan to track down the man who is brutally murdering women and goading the police to 'catch me if you can'. As everyone becomes a suspect, Ryan and his team get drawn further and further into the case, but for Ryan the nightmare gets closer to home than he could ever have imagined.

Good, but with reservations
Revisado: 08-19-23
Not bad, but I could have done without the extended sessions featuring gleeful killer and struggling victim. But that's what ff is for. Also Ryan comes up with some really awful dramatic statements like..."I just hope we catch him before he kills again"... oy vey. The studio narrator suffers from the same problem. Plus the real villain is easy to spot and so was his last victim. Which brings me to a thing I hate in fiction - to create a character for the sole purpose of providing a victim or leverage for the bad guy to use against the hero. It's manipulative and insulting to the reader if she is conned into actually caring about that character. It's a cheat. Don't do it writers. Natalie's victimization no doubt sets up Ryan's troubled nature in future books. He probably has nightmares or some such and is plagued with doubt and guilt forever.

Long and with ads
Revisado: 08-19-23
Too long and stretched out. Dialog doesn't ring true in a lot of places. Who is this instantly understanding and sharing, especially with monsters and dead fathers from another dimension. Also, there are ads from when this wasn't part of Audible Plus which being a paid service makes them extra annoying. Also annoying are the intro and outro lists of all the actors, writers and directors. I don't need to hear that every time. Most of the sound effects are well done. Dragged on too long - should have been about 15 or so episodes.

A worthy series
Revisado: 08-18-23
If you're looking for a straight-forward police procedural without all the blood, guts and cruelty, these are for you. The production is good and the intros and outros between episodes not too distracting. They are based from the 1950s to 70s so don't expect women to do more than make tea or be victims, but that's the way it was and there isn't any serious misogyny etc. The solutions are clever and entertaining and the characters are fun to be with through their cases.
