Historia
Wallace Stegner's uniquely American classic centers on Lyman Ward, a noted historian who relates a fictionalized biography of his pioneer grandparents at a time when he has become estranged from his own family. Through a combination of research, memory, and exaggeration, Ward voices ideas concerning the relationship between history and the present, art and life, parents and children, and husbands and wives.

Crochety old professor narrates story about West
Revisado: 12-13-22
Great narrator for the material, kind of a drawn out Victorian era story related within/against a 1960s era Berkeley timeline. The central figure is kind of a crochety old male academic history professor but you feel for him at the end.

Historia
If you've ever been curious about where the term "masochism" comes from, you will find it laden in the pages of Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's masterpiece, Venus in Furs, for whom the term was named. Drawn in part from his own life experiences, Sacher-Masoch's novel develops an eroticism unlike any other. The book's protagonist, Severin, is so infatuated and obsessed with the object of his desire, Wanda, that he asks to be her slave. Although hesitant at first, Wanda's treatment of Severin becomes more and more depraved, fueling Severin's own desires for cruelty.

Great Classic Erotica, Terrible Narration

Wanda's position was understandable.
Revisado: 08-28-22
Severn was more than a bit of an ass, despite everything to do with his ardour. I found him positively annoying. Still, the novel does present some genuine insights into gender relations and the (at the time theoretical) notion of women's rights before these became recognized by law, to some degree.

Historia
At Walden Pond, Henry David Thoreau reflected on simpler living in the natural world. By removing himself from the distractions of materialism, Thoreau hoped to not only improve his spiritual life but also gain a better understanding of society through solitary introspection. In Walden, Thoreau condenses his two-year, two-month, two-day stay into a single year, using the four seasons to symbolize human development - a cycle of life shared by both nature and man. A celebration of personal renewal through self-reliance, independence, and simplicity....

I can see why this is a classic. Slow to start but the last third is the most compelling conclusion to any novel I've ever read. Brilliant narration perfectly captures the novel's tone, the narrative convincingly captures the fever of Revolutionary France and what we would recognize today as PTSD symptoms in the character of the imprisoned father.

I don't think I missed much. Much ado about nothing, mostly about misplaced guilt. Puritan times really sucked!

If only more Christians would heed its message and leave society rather than seek to reform society by imposing their morality on us via the courts. If salvation is a choice, self-destruction must also be valid as an effective use of free-will. The story is fine, the narrator is great at conveying the spirit and essence of Bunyan's allegorical narrative.
