Once again I wish Audible would make sure narrators can pronounce at least one of the languages they’re going to be reading names and loan words in. I don’t speak any of the southeast Asian languages that many of the names of the subjects in this book come from, but the narrator’s Japanese pronunciation was painful enough I had to give up.

One of the best audiobooks of all time

What can I say about John le Carré that hasn't already been said? He is infinitely subtle, elegant in his prose and his characterization, his older work is rarely dated and he remains sharp and perceptive to this day. What makes this version of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy so superlative is the narration by Michael Jayston. Jayston was in the 1970s TV miniseries – he played Peter Guillam – and in my opinion you can hear it wonderfully, especially in his Smiley. This is one audiobook that I listen to over and over again, and I cannot recommend it strongly enough.

A pleasant meander through food trends

David Sax will take you through food trends, from cupcakes to Baconfests to chia everything to why Indian food is always just about to take off. The book is ultimately not as cohesive as it might be and Sax is a little more sanguine about food trends than I am, but the writing and narration are both engaging – I learned a lot, laughed a lot, and had a good time.

Deeply unsatisfying

The worst thing about The Three Body Problem is that it's not all bad. Cixin Liu can sometimes turn out a beautiful passage, engaging character, or arresting image. Unfortunately, this meant my reading experience was one of alternating boredom, frustration, and actual interest. Every time I decided I had had it and was going to quit, something would happen to string me along. In retrospect, I wish I'd just stopped in the first hour.
