I’ve listened to all of the NJO books so far. This is the only one that I outright had to skip. It is entirely filler and has nothing to do with the novel before or after. It is basically treated as a sequel to The Truce at Bakura, which occurred almost 20 years before, and didn’t need a sequel. Maybe the actual unabridged book makes more sense, but this audiobook is easy to skip. Just read the wookiepedia to see what happens. The next book is much better, but this trilogy is uninteresting as a whole.

Boring and forgettable.

This is one Star Wars book that could be completely ignored. The main story is about a stolen painting. It’s uninteresting. The real allure is in Leia’s discovery of her family history. It’s great to see her react to her grandmother and fathers story, but that’s not enough to carry the full 6 hours. Go ahead and read a synopsis instead of listening to this.

The best of a great trilogy.

I read this as a kid. I know they cut a lot of parts out but that’s just the way it is. I hope they rerelease it under the Essential Legends collection without abridgment. Think of it as an Audio Drama.

Overacted and a bit boring.

I really wanted to like this one. The beginning and very end were good. Unfortunately, the middle section drags on way too long. I had to force myself to finish it. Sam does a decent job but overacts too often in my opinion.

A step in the right direction for Disney Star Wars.

This was an enjoyable book. It was a little cheesy at times and some parts dragged on too long, but otherwise I enjoyed it. I was reluctant to check it out given that it was tied to the sequel trilogy, but it actually addressed a lot of the glaring questions in The Rise of Skywalker. It didn’t fix those issues but it did shine some much needed light on them. The narrator was decent. Not as good as Marc Thompson, but not bad. Some parts felt over acted, but it’s a minor complaint. All in all, I would recommend this book for any Star Wars fan who wants to learn more about the new sequel era.

Turn the speed to 80% and it’s much better.

Look, all the other reviews make valid points. Yes, I wish it was unabridged. Yes, I wish it was Marc Thompson. However, I enjoyed this audiobook. Anthony Heald is one the greatest narrators I’ve ever heard, but he doesn’t bring that level of talent to Star Wars. His voices for Han and Lando are particularly bad. I wonder if he has ever even seen Star Wars. Otherwise, I think he does a pretty decent job of reading the material. Slow it down to 80% speed and it sounds like a grandfather warmly reading you a bed time story. As far as the abridged story, yes it is jarring at times. You can tell that Luke and Mara or Jacen and Anakin did more than what is presented. Likewise, I know from having read the book before that entire sections and side characters were omitted. That being said, the story is understandable and rather enjoyable in my opinion. I approach these abridged Star Wars titles as audio dramas instead of audiobooks. That’s the mindset you should have if you want to give them a try. I do hope that Disney does an unabridged version of this book and many others. However, if a 19 book series is something your never going to read on your own, I think this is an enjoyable way to find out what the NJO was all about.

A decent book that could have been great.

Half of this book is about Ted Kaczynski. This half is fascinating and well done.

Unfortunately, the other half of the book is about the author. These sections were rather uninteresting and self-indulgent. There were several times where I considered giving up on this book because of the unnecessary details about the authors life. However, I’m glad that I finished this book. It paints a complete picture of Kaczynski’s deranged yet brilliant mind. I was completely unaware of how angry and cold he was. His manifesto and subsequent writings are clearly a way for him to rationalize his desire to destroy human life.

If you can tolerate the long irrelevant sections, you’ll find a decent book. The narration is amateur but tolerable.

Brilliant

I’ve been trying to read old children’s books that I missed out on as a child. This was a masterpiece in story telling and performance. It made me feel like a child again.
