So much better than the first book
Revisado: 10-02-21
The story continues and the character development improves dramatically. There's less male bashing and more realistic emotional reality. This sequel had me holding my breath more than once and the ending was not what I was expecting.
I don't know how I would react in some of the situations portrayed in the book, but I know I kept wishing some of the characters would develop a backbone. There's a bit of redemption at the end. The depravity of human beings boggles the mind and I lack the imagination the author used in several scenarios.
The author found her groove in book two and the story flowed well. The way Shelby ended it left me wanting to know to know more. Though I have to wonder if a professional editor was used because there was a stark contrast between books 1 and two. Regardless, they were both good listens (Audible version). On to book 3.

Historia
Julie Atwood is struggling with the day-to-day challenges of being a single mom. She is recently divorced, financially stressed, and still reeling from a violent attack in her past. She is determined to make it on her own, however. She learns self-defense skills and enrolls in a women’s-only firearms class. The urgency of her efforts takes on new importance as society begins unraveling around her. Conservatives and liberals are at war. Then the president cuts funding to so-called Sanctuary States, including her home state of Oregon. Julie loses her job. Everyone who lives off the government gets desperate. Riots. Crime. Fire.

Best I've read in this genre
Revisado: 09-28-21
Most of this type of book has a strong male lead so it was nice to read from a female perspective. It seems to have been written from personal experience as there was a realism not contained in other books.
Sadly, many things written in here are no longer fiction. The author has a good insight into human nature and the workings of government. She weaves real-life defense tactics smoothly into the story.
Another aspect I enjoyed was her process for preparing. As a widowed mom, I can relate on a level that married women can't. It's a struggle financially to make sure I keep a roof over our heads much less preparing for a meltdown of society.
The reason for 4 stars is the negativity toward the male population. I'm also ugly as a mud fence so the men in my sphere don't treat me the way the men in this book treated Julie so there's that. Also, the reader is a bit too breathless for my taste. I listen to alot of Davina Porter and Barabara Rosenblat so a much younger voice was a bit too girlish for me. It got better as the book went on, just be aware.
Overall I really enjoyed A Great State, The Divide. So much so I'm spending a hoarded credit for Book 2.

Historia
Life is not easy for the poor relations of England’s upper crust, but fate and clever schemes bring them together. Lady Fortescue and Colonel Sandhurst hatch a plan: What if they were to transform her decrepit Bond Street home into a posh hotel, offering their guests the pleasure of being waited upon by nobility? With the help of other down-and-out aristocrats, they do just that, and London’s newest hotel, The Poor Relation, is born. The establishment is an immediate hit with London’s most illustrious citizens, save the Duke of Rowcester....

Revisado: 06-27-21
I'm not quite sure what I was expecting. It's a sweet story but the ending was kind "meh" and the character development a bit lacking. Not sure I would buy the sequel. Davina Porter, however, did not disappoint.

Historia
Nevada Barr quickly attracted the attention of mystery fans when her first Anna Pigeon mystery, Track of the Cat, appeared. Now she immerses the intrepid park ranger in a perilous search that will take her far below the waters of Lake Superior. As Anna spends her days patrolling its shores, the surface of Lake Superior fills with tourists. In the depths below lie an ancient ship and the bones of its sailors.

Not as good as I remember them.
Revisado: 01-31-21
Once upon a time I was a truck driver and adored Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon series. Apparently my tastes have changed or it's not as captivating as it used to be but A Superior Death failed to hold my attention. I had to start it over 3x and finally pushed through to the end. I had a difficult time keeping the characters straight and the character development left me with a blah feeling. I was a bit disappointed overall because Michigan is my native state. I will give her kudos for the way she writes about widowhood and the loss of a spouse. I'm about the same aga as Anna's character and the bits where she's describing her loneliness and thoughts on loss are spot on.

Not bad for a 20 year old novel
Revisado: 05-08-20
I had heard of Nelson Deville novels, but never read one. I'm sorry I waited so long. I listened to the Audible version during Quarantine while I quilted. The author leads you along a logical line of investigation while building an interesting cast of characters and the narrator, Scott Brick, is a favorite. Who doesn't appreciate a good novel set on the East Coast with legends of buried treasures? No spoilers, but there's a disappointing twist at the end with the guilty party. This book made for a great listening experience and I highly recommend it.

Not what I was expecting
Revisado: 12-16-19
I've listened to many David Baldacci novels so I was very pleasantly surprised at the climax. I'm also a quilter and the reader is easy to hear over the sewing machine with a clear, cultured voice. I'm looking forward to listening to the next book in the series.

Imagine it were possible to bring the characters from a book to life. Not like when you listen to an audiobook with such enchantment that the characters seem to jump off the pages and into your bedroom...but for real. Imagine they could actually climb out of the pages and into our world. Then imagine if those characters brought their world into ours.
