Historia
In this collection of lectures that Richard Feynman originally gave in 1963, unpublished during his lifetime, the Nobel Prize-winning physicist discusses several of the ultimate questions of science. What is the nature of the tension between science and religious faith? Why does uncertainty play such a crucial role in the scientific imagination? Is this really a scientific age?

Not the best of Feynman but good enough

I enjoyed listening to those lectures and pondered how the subjects mentioned are still valid.

Potentially a good story
Revisado: 11-06-23
But badly executed. Perhaps the author should take some courses on structuring a story, so that it does not read like an IRS report. Also, it requires good editing.

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Historia
Private equity surrounds us. Firms like Blackstone, Carlyle, and KKR are among the largest employers in America and hold assets that rival those of small countries. Yet few understand what these firms are or how they work. In Plunder, Brendan Ballou explains how private equity has reshaped American business by raising prices, reducing quality, cutting jobs, and shifting resources from productive to unproductive parts of the economy.

From Maxed Out to PE - where are we heading?
Revisado: 06-22-23
I have been training corporate bankers in risk analysis for over a quarter of a century. After the subprime crisis, I started saying that the next crisis would be caused by PE funds, although I did not predict the extent to which they would game the system. The bubble will eventually burst, as the processes described are not sustainable. It just makes me angry that those excesses destroy free market economy.

Historia
In When McKinsey Comes to Town, two prizewinning investigative journalists have written a portrait of the company sharply at odds with its public image. Bogdanich and Forsythe have penetrated the veil of secrecy surrounding McKinsey by conducting hundreds of interviews, obtaining tens of thousands of revelatory documents, and following rule #1 of investigative reporting: Follow the money. When McKinsey Comes to Town is a a devastating portrait of a firm whose work has often made the world more unequal, more corrupt, and more dangerous.

Superb topic, poor execution
Revisado: 10-06-22
McKinsey was one of the firms I wished I worked for when I was younger. Now I don’t regret that I didn’t.
However, there is nothing new that the authors describe: cost cutting, right-sizing, getting contracts improperly, providing pro bono work to obtain information which could be monetised in other contracts or even helping dictators. All of this could be described in the introduction. It would make a better book if the authors limited the scope and went deeper.

Overcrowded
Revisado: 11-16-20
Too many characters, too many suspects, too many twists. A whodunnit with a mission to save the world, although this only becomes apparent in the last chapter.
