Historia
William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

Wordsmith with simplistic plot
Revisado: 05-07-24
I generally love this author! She has a wonderful way of crafting a sentence. This particular plot was not up to her usual. It was somewhat simplistic and predictable. Almost a soap opera. I had a bit of an issue with the men in the story. They spent all of their lives distracted by alcohol or pipe dreams, removing themselves from coparenting and committing to a full relationship with their children. Yet they are held up as models, while the women who picked up the pieces are somewhat demonized.

Historia
At one point or another, we’ve all been asked to name five people, living or dead, with whom we’d like to have dinner. Why do we choose the people we do? And what if that dinner was to actually happen? These are the questions Rebecca Serle contends with in The Dinner List. When Sabrina arrives at her 30th birthday dinner she finds at the table not just her best friend, but also three significant people from her past, and well, Audrey Hepburn. As the dinner table conversation begins, it becomes clear that there’s a reason these six people have been gathered together.

Nothing new to say ...this way
Revisado: 03-09-21
If this was not required as part of my book club, I would never have finished reading this book. I can’t wait to see what other members say!
The overall evaluation of the book can be summed up in the old phrase UCLA versus USC. Every stereotype you’ve heard about students at USC is the total personality of this first person narrator. She says things to a man and best friend that she says that she “loves“, even though she doesn’t mean them. She loses the love of her life, and he never knows the extent of her love. I got so tired of this whiny, self-centered, spoiled brat. The narrator, the author, didn’t help one bit. The burn of her voice only accentuated that self entitled young girl. Settle should have never taken on the narration of this audible book. By the end of this book I was actually rooting for Tobias to fall in love with and elope with Jessica. It would’ve been a better deal for both of them.

Shallow characters meet predictable story
Revisado: 08-08-19
Stereotyping, characters as foils - existing only to push the plot forward, this book makes the final observation that abandonment might not be that bad after all.
The rich are thoughtless, adoption is suspect, academics are brainless. This book attempts to rewrite Catcher in the Rye with an international twist.

Author got bored with writing
Revisado: 05-27-18
The performance of this book is wonderful! The epilogue came from nowhere. It’s NOT a shocking ending, just not developed. I know they are not right for one another, but the definition of love (how that feeling brings you to an understanding of “self”) comes to the characters far before the last chapter, so the book goes on and on and on.

Predictable, unsatisfactory and non-suspenseful.
The characters are not richly fleshed out, so I didn’t care about their issues. Once I got into the terrorist/anorexic/impromptu love affair, I lost interest. Deus ex Machine. Not a good representation of this author’s body of work.
