Historia
When journalist Lily Bigelow is found dead in the courtyard of Carrickfergus castle, it looks like a suicide. Yet there are a few things that bother Duffy just enough to keep the case file open, which is how he finds out that Bigelow was working on a devastating investigation of corruption and abuse at the highest levels of power in the UK and beyond. And so Duffy has two impossible problems on his desk: Who killed Lily Bigelow? And what were they trying to hide?

Delightful read
Revisado: 12-28-23
Great characters. Duffy is a mere human cop who seems to get by both in his life and as a detective. Narrator was awesome, making each character distinct and giving me a real feel for who lives in Ireland. I jumped into the series here need to go back and read 1-4

Historia
“Can I kiss you?” It was two months before the world premiere of Juno, and Elliot Page was in his first ever queer bar. The hot summer air hung heavy around him as he looked at her. And then it happened. In front of everyone. A previously unfathomable experience. Here he was on the precipice of discovering himself as a queer person, as a trans person. Getting closer to his desires, his dreams, himself, without the repression he’d carried for so long. But for Elliot, two steps forward had always come with one step back.

Difficult to listen to
Revisado: 12-25-23
A lot of pain in this book with an uplifting ending. Listened in part because I have a relative going through gender dysmorphia now. As Page says it’s difficult to describe to those who haven’t experienced it. At least we now have options and support.

This explosive new audiobook challenges many of the long-held assumptions about blacks, about Jews, about Germans and Nazis, about slavery, and about education. Plainly written, powerfully reasoned, and backed with a startling array of documented facts, Black Rednecks and White Liberals takes on the trendy intellectuals of our times as well as historic interpreters of American life.

I completed this book because I bought it. Have enjoyed other titles by Vicky Ward. I think real estate moguls are not my thing. What a bizarre world they live in. I prefer to read about people who think about something besides themselves and money.

Historia
When Michael Fanone self-deployed to the Capitol on January 6, 2021, he had no idea his life was about to change. When he got to the front of the line, he urged his fellow officers to hold it against the growing crowd of insurrectionists—until he found himself pulled into the mob, tased until he had a heart attack, and viciously beaten with a Blue Lives Matter flag as shouts to kill him rang out. Now, Fanone is ready to tell the full story of that infamous day, along with exploring our country’s most critical issues as someone who has had firsthand experience with many of them.

I did not expect you to like this book
Revisado: 12-21-23
I failed several times to generate enough excitement to get past the first chapter. I was very put off by the author’s voice and demeanor. Once I got past that I realized the author’s voice was the whole thing. I too have many differences with the author but I also have similarities. I had to get past my prejudices to hear what he has to say and I’m glad I did. If we care about this country and preserving our democracy we need to be tolerant of our differences and listen to each other. Thanks for the lesson.

What we take for granted
Revisado: 12-20-23
We pay for the NPS through our taxes and figure they are ours to visit when and how we wish. But what if you become ill or injured? Enjoyed this honest look into the motivations of a first responder and the effect of this work on his life. Thank you for what you do. And as citizens it is our responsibility to do what we can to use the parks safely. Be prepared; stay hydrated; become informed about the attractions and don’t take unnecessary risks; don’t approach wild animals; do what you can to prevent fires and appreciate the workers who enable you to enjoy the parks.

Historia
On January 6, 2021, Donald Trump incited a violent mob to storm the US Capitol in attempts to overturn the presidential election. It was a betrayal of our Constitution, and one of the darkest days in recent history. Yet to former congressman Adam Kinzinger it was also the culmination of a cultural and political rupture he’d long seen coming. Constructive criticism from within the Republican Party was no longer enough. It was time to stand up, even if it meant betraying his own party.

It pains me that democrats and republicans cannot talk
Revisado: 12-09-23
Kinzinger models how we can work together for the good of all. His views on evangelical Christianity helped me understand that I am not necessarily at odds with all evangelicals—just the vocal ones I have been familiar with. We have lost sight of the reason Congress exists. One wonders how we can maintain democracy when the primary concern of many politicians is being reelected. Reading this book may change how I decide who gets my vote in the future.

Surprising
Revisado: 11-30-23
I had listened to part I and almost did not listen to this one because I felt I knew enough about the situation. Boy was I wrong! This is a story about human weakness and forgiveness; about accepting each other including our faults; about the stigma of mental illness and how that limits our ability to deal with it.

Historia
Forty years ago, following the appointment of their professors to the federal bench, a tiny group of conservative law students at Yale Law School worried that their ideas might disappear from intellectual discourse in this bastion of liberal thought. They set out to fill that void. But they ended up achieving way more than that. Over the next few decades, the Federalist Society became an integral tool in the larger conservative movement, with political, judicial, and social repercussions ending in the conservative capture of the Supreme Court and the election of Donald Trump to the presidency.
