Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Historia
Conjure Women is a sweeping story that brings the world of the South before and after the Civil War vividly to life. Spanning eras and generations, it tells of the lives of three unforgettable women: Miss May Belle, a wise healing woman; her precocious and observant daughter, Rue, who is reluctant to follow in her mother’s footsteps as a midwife; and their master’s daughter, Varina. The secrets and bonds among these women and their community come to a head at the beginning of a war and at the birth of an accursed child.

Historia
Indian American journalist Smita has returned to India to cover a story, but reluctantly: long ago she and her family left the country with no intention of ever coming back. As she follows the case of Meena—a Hindu woman attacked by members of her own village and her own family for marrying a Muslim man—Smita comes face to face with a society where tradition carries more weight than one’s own heart, and a story that threatens to unearth the painful secrets of Smita’s own past.

Great story BUT…
Revisado: 06-06-23
I loved this story, BUT the way the words of the other woman in the story (don’t want to say too much so as not to spoil it for readers) are NOT written in a way that relflect that woman’s voice, experience or life circumstances. I see that as a major flaw.

A masterpiece!
Revisado: 12-29-22
I’m in awe of how Ms. Kingsolver wrote this book from the perspective of a young, orphaned boy in rural Virginia! The rhythm of the story, it’s flow was simply perfect, the characters so incredibly well developed that to us as readers they all seem totally real. Just as the characters and story of “The Poisonwood Bible” has stayed with me since I read it in 2005, so too will this book stay with me for the rest of my life. A masterpiece for which I’m sure she’ll receive many most deserved awards.
Reading of book: Absolutely Superb!
