I loved this story, cried at multiple parts, laughed at others and was thoroughly satisfied with the ending! While it’s an imagining of death that I never would have thought of, I was comforted by it. In America, unlike some countries and cultures, death is something we fear and work hard to conquer or at the very least, postpone. Yet it is inevitable. The author’s imagination made this story of death and the life after, one which I will remember and think on for a long time. Several tough subjects are dealt with in very sensitive ways, and they brought tears to my eyes. The narrator did a superb job with the various characters, getting their voices to be unique and believable which is not easy when producing an audio book. Great book, great telling of it! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Historia
Desperate to escape from London, single mother Zoe wants to build a new life for herself and her four-year-old son Hari. She can barely afford the crammed studio apartment on a busy street where shouting football fans keep them awake all night. Hari’s dad, Jaz, a charismatic but perpetually broke DJ, is no help at all. But his sister, Surinder, comes to Zoe’s aid, hooking her up with a job as far away from the urban crush as possible: a bookshop on the banks of Loch Ness. And there’s a second job to cover housing: Zoe will be an au pair at a castle in the Scottish Highlands.

Wonderful story!
Revisado: 06-15-23
I absolutely love this author’s books! The settings are always so well depicted, I can picture it. The characters are so real, I feel I have come to know them personally by the end of the stories, which I never want to end. The narration is superb, with a slew of voice intonations and accents for the various characters, which bring them alive and make them recognizable. This story was particularly sweet as it involves children who have been neglected and traumatized, slowly coming out of their trauma due to the loving care and support of the nanny who comes to take care of them and their father. Excellent story! It also makes me want to dive into the various books mentioned in the author’s stories. I just wish she would also include their author’s names as the titles are new to me and there seems to occasionally be other books of the same name with different authors.

Interesting but frustrating
Revisado: 05-30-23
While the overall story line was good, the story unfolded very slowly, the romance of the main characters was maddeningly slow to happen even though the author made it obvious it would happen eventually. Then it went from ‘zero to 60’ in no time at all, with Mary, who was seemingly too naive to know that the boarder was making sexually suggestive advances at her, then seducing Wucosh and stripping naked in front of him and having sex with him. It was completely out of character and unrealistic to make such a leap in the matter of a few hours. Their courtship also seemed slow to progress, yet they were evidently having sex often. Then, when the story finally gets to the marriage and you are expecting to hear more about their son and grandson, since it’s narrated from the grown grandson’s perspective, the story ends abruptly. It was disappointing. But by far the most frustrating part was the mispronunciation of common words all through the book, by the voice actress who read the book for Audible, as well as her lack of voice inflection where there should have been some. Her voice was mostly monotone and emotionless, and when there was inflection, it was usually at the end of words, phrases, or sentences. The use of the word coax is abundant in this book, and she pronounced it co-axe every time, for one example. She sounded like she had an American accent, but didn’t have a sufficient understanding of the correct pronunciation of many, many American words. I was not super impressed with this book or it’s Audible narration, though the author has great potential. 73 chapters is far too long for this story.

A book truly worthy of repeat readings!
Revisado: 03-24-23
I read this book a while ago, and just now have listened to it on audible and loved it both times! Nina, the main character, is so relatable yet such an inspiration. I want to be her and live her life. The book suggestions intertwined through the story should be written down as soon as they’re mentioned or you’ll forget them and need to read it again . . . oh wait! That’s not a bad idea. Read it again even if you already did! 😊 The author and narrator both made Scotland sound so enticing and lovely, even while showcasing its ruggedness and difficulties. I can’t recommend this book enough! Go read it already! You’ll be glad you did.

Years ago, Flora fled the quiet Scottish island where she grew up - and she hasn't looked back. What would have done on Mure? It's a place where everyone has known her all her life, where no one will let her forget the past. In bright, bustling London, she can be anonymous, ambitious...and hopelessly in love with her boss. But when fate brings Flora back to the island, she's suddenly swept once more into life with her brothers - all strapping, loud, and seemingly incapable of basic housework - and her father.

Fascinating peek into life on the northern Scottish Isles
Revisado: 03-14-23
I like the story and loved the setting. It makes me want to visit there! I enjoyed the accents used for the basic narration and all of the characters who were native to the Island. However, the narrator’s accents used for the American and British characters were horrible. She made the men sound like they were snooty and perpetually sarcastic at all times. It was unpleasant to listen to these male characters being given high pitched sarcastic voices when all of the Islanders had low voices. Overall still a good book and pretty narration. I recommend it.

I have exactly 5 hours and 10 minutes to get from Boston to New York City or the professional opportunity of a lifetime disappears. My only travel option? The second to last seat on a discount bus. Across from the bathroom. Wearing last night’s clothes (don’t ask). All worth it if I can make it in time.

Funny and Fun!
Revisado: 03-02-23
I loved this book! So much so, I think it’s my new favorite! The author has a great sense of humor and was adept at incorporating plenty of humor throughout the story. The setting for so much of the story was simply the two main characters sitting next to each other on multiple modes of transportation on their long journey, but there was so much happening in their conversations, it was never boring. I love fun books, and this one had me smiling often. 👍🏻👍🏻

Historia
Robin Windsor has spent most of her life under an assumed name, running from her family's ignominious past. She thought she'd finally found sanctuary in her rather unremarkable used bookstore just up the street from the marina in River City, Michigan. But the store is struggling and the past is hot on her heels. When she receives an eerily familiar book in the mail on the morning of her father's scheduled execution, Robin is thrown back to the long-lost summer she met Peter Flynt, the perfect boy who ruined everything.

I loved this book, and was equally pleased with the narration! The story woven by the author is compelling and the characters are wonderful. The narrator had a voice and inflections that were at once easy to listen to and full of emotions, bringing the various characters and the story alive! I highly recommend both the book and its author, and the narrator.

Touching story
Revisado: 02-13-23
I enjoyed the story. The characters are believable and the settings are described well, so it is easy to enter into the story as a spectator as if we’re right there. I wasn’t fond of the accent of the narrator who voiced Lane, but she did a good job otherwise. The actor who narrated Sally did a superb job! The ending was sweet and brought tears to my eyes, as the character talked about her dementia and how much her family meant to her. Overall, a really good story.
