The Civil War: A Narrative, Vol. 2 continues one of the most remarkable works of history ever fashioned. Focusing on the pivotal year of 1863, the second volume in Shelby Foote's masterful narrative history brings to life some of the most dramatic and important moments in the Civil War, including the Battle of Gettysburg and Grant's Vicksburg Campaign. The word narrative is the key to this book's extraordinary incandescence and truth: The story is told entirely from the point of view of the people involved.

Stunning
Revisado: 10-11-23
I cannot imagine a better reader than the one I’ve been listening to for more than 80 hours, Grover Gardner. And I cannot imagine a better work of history than this classic by Shelby Foote. Using his gifts as a novelist, he creates vivid scenes, the sights, sounds, tastes, smells, and feelings, wherever possible and apt. The major characters, the Titans, such as Lincoln, Davis, Grant, and Lee are likewise made as realistic as any writer can. The common man and woman are not left out, with many excerpts from letters and diaries written over the years. Finally, the horror of this disgustingly epic bloodflood is presented in the graphic detail it deserves.

Historia
This is a story about the dirty secrets of the most powerful people in the world—including Donald Trump. It is based on exclusive interviews with dozens of high-level sources—intelligence officers in the CIA, FBI, and the KGB, thousands of pages of FBI investigations, police investigations, and news articles in English, Russian, and Ukrainian. American Kompromat shows that from Trump to Jeffrey Epstein, kompromat was used in operations far more sinister than the public could ever imagine.

If you’re curious about the evidence on whether or not Trump has long been a Russian intelligence asset, then this book is for you. This is not an issue about conservatives versus liberals. This is an issue of national security.

Historia
The decline and fall of Rudy Giuliani, from “America’s Mayor” to public spectacle, has all the makings of a modern Shakespearean tragedy. Those who know Giuliani, whose tough leadership and even tougher politics helped revitalize New York City in the 1990s and lead the country through 9/11, have stood by and watched with incredulity as he put himself at the heart of impeachment charges against the President.

Explains Giuliani
Revisado: 09-21-22
I enjoy Michael Wolf’s writing much more than straight news journalists like Woodward or Schmidt, because he describes the feel and the meaning, and yet seems to be sticking to the facts, in fact, exploring the facts, not afraid to speculate about what people are really feeling and thinking. But his perceptions seem to be insights. About Giuliani, the opinions from three people who knew Giuliani in his youth are specially telling. Giuliani was always crazy. Driven, aggressive, perhaps sociopathic. Like Trump, no conception much less affection for the rule of law, or at least for applying it to himself; overlapping business and politics to further his interests, without a twinge of conscience. Always requiring fame and fortune, even if the fame is infamy.

Historia
The transition from President Donald J. Trump to President Joseph R. Biden Jr. stands as one of the most dangerous periods in American history. But as number one internationally best-selling author Bob Woodward and acclaimed reporter Robert Costa reveal for the first time, it was far more than just a domestic political crisis. Woodward and Costa interviewed more than 200 people at the center of the turmoil, resulting in more than 6,000 pages of transcripts - and a spellbinding and definitive portrait of a nation on the brink.

First hand and up close
Revisado: 10-20-21
General Milley may be correct. Just as the events in Russia in 1905, the failed revolution, were a precursor to the successful revolution of 1917, so maybe the failed insurgency of January 6, 2021 will be a precursor of a real revolution to come. But does the majority of the American people want any such thing? Were a majority of the Russian people in 1905 bolsheviks? No, and they weren’t in 1917 either.
Things fall apart and the center does not hold.
This is required reading for anyone who cares about what happened in the US in the last two years.
One of my favorite parts are when Lindsey Graham and Pence’s legal advisors and White House attorneys are all scouring all the testimonies and 70+ court cases for a single scrap of evidence of actual voter fraud and find nothing. Likewise, when Pence’s advisor searches the country for a single Republican constitutional scholar who will underwrite Pence not counting all electoral votes. Thank God there are still some people who believe there is such a thing as truth and it can be known—in contrast to academic postmodernists and uneducated Trump supporters.
Another favorite part, from the end of the book: In 2011, Joe Biden met with Prime Minister Putin and said to him, “Mr. Prime Minister, I’m looking into your eyes and I don’t think you have a soul”. Putin: “Mr. Vice President, I think we understand one another.” My esteem for Biden just rose. Yes, you often can detect a sociopath by looking at how they look at you, unless you’re as naive as George W.

Historia
While researching the toxic and addictive properties of sugar for Fat Chance, Robert Lustig made an alarming discovery - our pursuit of happiness is being subverted by a culture of addiction and depression from which we may never recover. Dopamine is the "reward" neurotransmitter that tells our brains we want more; yet every substance or behavior that releases dopamine in the extreme leads to addiction. Serotonin is the "contentment" neurotransmitter that tells our brains we don't need any more; yet its deficiency leads to depression.

Why do all diets fail?
Revisado: 08-29-20
This and few other books have the answer, backed by research science. Books such as Fat Chance and Willpower. The steps may seem radical, but what is really radical is what the food industry has been selling us in the last few decades. Around 80,000 Americans will need to get a toe or other limb amputated this year due to diabetes. That’s radical. And if you’re interested in how your brain works, you’ll find this book fascinating. This plan works 280 times better than any other weight loss plan. I lost 50 lbs and more importantly kept it off.

In 2009, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performed at the Super Bowl's halftime show. The experience was so exhilarating that Bruce decided to write about it. That's how this extraordinary autobiography began. Over the past seven years, Bruce Springsteen has privately devoted himself to writing the story of his life, bringing to this audio the same honesty, humor, and originality found in his songs.

Parts made me laugh and other parts weep, or nearly so. S is amazingly articulate about the creative process. Much of it is simply astonishing. Overall it seemed to make my heart grow five sizes, just to realize how much beauty, truth and goodness—his and his bands’ music—can come out of just plain hard work.
