An important book that journeyed between stories of the natural world and Michael McCarthy’s personal milestones. A book I will read again and maybe again to re experience the “aha” and “of course” moments of McCarthy’s exquisite observation of our species and the natural world. An account that reminds us what it is to feel joy, to feel wonder and mystery. And despite the extraordinary arrogance and stupidity of the species called Homosapiens I feel if we could all just read this book we might be ok.

A beautiful book that I have been citing since beginning reading it, to friends, to family, to colleagues, to that person you get chatting to at the local food store about the importance of fat and the meaning of life! This is getting a second listen. This is a book I needed right now. Which fits with Fred looking back on one’s life and seeing connections and order like some divine script. Thank you to John Kemph and his Regenerative Agriculture podcast who introduced me to Fred Provenza and so many other extraordinary minds.

This beautiful profound interweaving tale is the story of nine characters who learn to see and then fight for the natural world that the majority and powers that be, can’t seem to tear down fast enough.

Suspenseful, never predictable and filled with stories within stories of fateful injustices and human endeavour and creativity to counter. Each character uniquely lures and winds you in, as the story unfolds.

It was a shocking revelation of what’s gone on across my lifetime before my very eyes. Rachel Carson wrote Silent Spring in 1962 and her love and awe for the natural world is echoed in the voice of Patricia Westerfield, a brilliant and dedicated scientist, alone in her seeing and victim to the cruelty that only Homo sapiens can inflict upon itself so artfully time and time again.

A recent history of sorts, so recent that it brings us to yesterday ( I write this as COP26 in Glasgow takes place ), raising questions we know we should rest upon but we’re are too busy to : when will we act to alter our insatiable habits? will artists and storytellers be our prophets? who owns the natural world really?will the internet save us or lead us to AI that like the natural world will be much smarter than we seem to be able to be?

And then I’m forgetting the voices of the trees that seem to climb over you as you listen to this tale. Richard powers has researched so thoroughly the worlds of The Overstory but he clearly knows and loves trees for every mention is a reminder to look closer and be stiller. And finally, Suzanne Toren voices each character with such veracity and tenderness and narrates superbly. I am so grateful to have listened to this beautiful book.

This book talked intimately to me and has me reassessing many aspects of my behaviour and deeply entrenched habits. I’ve listened to it twice now and different parts resonated a second time round. The concept of upper limit probleming or ULPING as it get colloquially referred to at one point is perhaps familiar as the concept we know already as self sabotage. Only here the description and examples given make it applicable to all of us a lot more than I had previously considered. Behaviours such as worry, bickering, deflection, criticism and blame all feature as predominantly avoidable and destructive and certainly a gross misuse of our time. The concept of Einstein time I’m still absorbing but really want to open up to. On my first reading it was lost on me. On the second I’m leaning into it. I don’t think I would have written this review had I not thought I had Einstein on my side. ☺️ Hugely grateful for this insightful and uplifting book. Thank you Gay Hendricks.

I came to this book thanks to a podcast by Tim Ferris where his guest and friend Neil Strauss recommended this book among others. I found it illuminating and disturbing. Although the case studies and examples that author Pia Mellody cites are often extreme examples, I found myself reflecting profoundly upon my own behaviour and that of my own family. Milder and perhaps more socially acceptable aspects of this disease ( as Pia calls it) seem to be apparent everywhere. It has stimulated my desire to learn more and I compliment Pia and her team on describing the symptoms and behaviour of Codependence so specifically. Perhaps the extremity of some examples can hinder recognising how Codependence may play a lesser role in some of our relationships. I found myself saying a lot “that’s not me! I’d never do that.” Only to moments later say “gosh I do that!” I think this book is of enormous value to parents who may be floundering a bit as well. Many of the examples of mature parenting for guiding the growth and development of children were gems to me. We get very distracted in this modern world.
