A father publicly beheaded in the blistering heat of a Saudi Arabian public square. A notorious Syrian biotech expert found eyeless in a Damascus junkyard. This is exactly what I was looking for in a time adventure! Just the right amount of drama, intrigue, and peppered with history and interesting approaches to the time continuum. The V.O. is outstanding! Loved this one, and I’d bought the next before it finished.

Historia
Meet Laszlo, eight-hundred-year-old demon and Hell’s least productive Curse Keeper. From his office beneath Midtown, he oversees the Drakeford Curse, which involves a pathetic family upstate and a mysterious black monolith. It’s a sexy enough assignment—colonial origins, mutating victims, et cetera—but Laszlo has no interest in maximizing the curse’s potential; he’d rather sunbathe in Ibiza, quaff martinis, and hustle the hustlers on Manhattan’s subway.

Solid, Fun Story
Revisado: 10-22-24
Despite some cliches and predictable bits, this was a fun story with interesting characters and modern parallel-world building that I really enjoyed. The VO was marvelous, and brought it all together flawlessly. I look forward to a sequel, and/or a treatment…
I laughed, I cringed, I flew through it. Good stuff.

Mars is changing. Seemingly overnight the once "Red" planet is turning to gray. Something is happening, something unnatural. A team of, literally, rocket scientists figure out a way to send a probe, very fast, to Mars to determine how and why it is changing. However, when the probe is destroyed well short of the formerly red planet, it's apparent that Mars is being used as a staging ground. The only viable target for that staging ground is Earth.

Got Better, Got Potential
Revisado: 10-16-24
It was a bit of a slow starter, but I dug it more as it progressed. Opens up good sequel potential that I’ll certainly follow now. The VO was decent, but most of the voices sound about the same (cadence too), and I had to jump back often to check which character had been speaking. I’m not sure how much that contributed to my lack of connection to most of the character (there are many), but I really only got a feel for a few of them. Might give it another listen. The science and technology aspects really took this up a notch, and made me want to learn more.

With Earth governments consumed by the ravages of climate change and unable to take the risks necessary to make rapid progress in space, the crew must build their own next-gen spacecraft capable of mounting a rescue in time for the asteroid's next swing by Earth.

What a way to expand on the first book! I can’t wait to continue with this story. It has so many things I enjoy about sci fi, including some political intrigue and nerding out on chemistry and blockchain. I love love loved Daemon and this series has me right back in the saddle with Suarez. Into the Beyond!

YA feel but good stuff
Revisado: 06-27-24
I could see this being a movie. Good story but too repetitive and redundant with the writing. The VO is very good, and kept me engaged. Wrapped up too quickly and things were rather predictable, but it was a decent start to what should be an interesting series. Not quite for me with the YA feeling from the language, emotions, and simplicity, but the main characters are young so that does work fairly well here.

Good, promising start
Revisado: 01-11-24
I like a lot of the characters, although I got YA vibes with the writing. Not a deal killer but I hope it all grows a bit for the next part in the series, writing and story crafting included. Much of it was fairly cliche sci-fi descriptions of scenes, reminiscent of post apocalyptic movies but not really drawing me into this altered world like I’d hoped. Still, quite promising. Very good narrator.

Historia
Porter Beck is the sheriff in the high desert of Nevada, north of Las Vegas. Born and raised there, he left to join the Army, where he worked in Intelligence, deep in the shadows in far off places. Now he's back home, doing the same lawman's job his father once did, before his father started to develop dementia. All is relatively quiet in this corner of the world, until on old, retired FBI agent is found killed. He was brutally tortured before he was killed and clues at the scene point to a mystery dating back to the early days of the nuclear age.

Great Sequel, Too Many SFX
Revisado: 08-11-23
This story really expanded upon the first nicely. Plenty of clever dialogue to keep me interested, and there were pivotal moments that stirred my emotions unexpectedly.
The dramatized performance is sooo much better than the regular audiobook, and not missing much (if any?) of the original text. Also, here everybody pronounces Kylar the same way (Ky-ler, which is correct IMO), unlike the regular audiobook narrator calling him KY-LARR, which actually annoyed me so much I returned it. I was happy to find this wonderfully dramatized version.
The only thing that repeatedly got on my nerves was the very loud, overbearing sfx of bloody action and fight scenes. It’s just too much and goes on for way too long nearly every time. I GET IT! Lots of people are dying horribly! I don’t need to hear EVERY fucking agonizing scream or EVERY body being ripped to pieces. It’s laughable how long some of those scenes go on, and it really took me out of the story at times instead of hooking me in. The narrators are great, but I’d cut the sfx sequences in half and drop them by about 2 decibels for better enjoyment. Skipped through quite a few of those.
I ultimately enjoyed this book quite a lot, and I’m looking forward to the 3rd dramatization.

The world outside has grown toxic, the view of it limited, talk of it forbidden. The remnants of humanity live underground in a single silo. But there are always those who hope, who dream. These are the dangerous people, the residents who infect others with their optimism. Their punishment is simple. They are given the very thing they want: They are allowed to go outside.

Good Start
Revisado: 05-29-23
Pretty solid story. I really wanted more from the personalities and the rushed end/resolution at Silo 18 was a disappointment. I was also hoping for a bit more detail of the technology they use and how they go about using/maintaining it. Seems so crucial but I’m left wondering about so much. I’m in for the next one up, though.
