Historia
Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry's eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!

Historia
V.I. has been visiting Club Gouge, Chicago’s edgiest nightspot, where a woman known as the Body Artist turns her naked body into a canvas for the audience to paint on. The show attracts all kinds of people, from a menacing off-duty cop to Ukrainian mobsters and Iraq war vets - and V.I.’s impetuous cousin, Petra. A tormented young painter shows up, too, and the intricate designs she creates on the Body Artist drive one of the vets into a violent rage.

Terrible narrator ruins a decent story
Revisado: 07-11-24
I’ve read 8 or 9 V I Warshawski novels by Sara Paretsky in print form. It’s been a while, and I thought I’d try an audiobook.
The narrator’s voice was so crispy and and harsh. Such a know-it-all. I felt as though someone was yelling at me and highly annoyed. Not pleasant. I had to force myself to finish it.
I will not be reading or listening to another…

Historia
In 1942, the Gestapo sent out an urgent transmission: "She is the most dangerous of all Allied spies. We must find and destroy her." The target in their sights was Virginia Hall, a Baltimore socialite who talked her way into Special Operations Executive, the spy organization dubbed Winston Churchill's "Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare." She became the first Allied woman deployed behind enemy lines and - despite her prosthetic leg - helped to light the flame of the French Resistance, revolutionizing secret warfare as we know it.

Important story told as boring exposition
Revisado: 06-12-24
The story of Virginia Hall is important, but we get nothing of her inner conflict, no physical descriptions of the characters she met, no feelings or reflections about the many people she unwittingly sent to their deaths. It was like reading a long term paper written for Freshman English. Nonfiction—but not Creative Nonfiction

Historia
The Complaints: that's the name given to the Internal Affairs department who seek out dirty and compromised cops, the ones who've made deals with the devil. And sometimes The Complaints must travel. A major inquiry into a neighboring police force sees Malcolm Fox and his colleagues cast adrift, unsure of territory, protocol, or who they can trust. An entire station-house looks to have been compromised, but as Fox digs deeper, he finds the trail leads him back in time to the suicide of a prominent politician and activist.

This book had intricacy, well developed and believable characters, a plot spanning two time periods with ties to politics and danger. I only wish Matthew’s sister wasn’t such a whiny pain.

Historia
Nobody likes The Complaints—they're the cops who investigate other cops. It's a department known within the force as The Dark Side, and it's where Malcolm Fox works. He's a serious man with a father in a nursing home and a sister who persists in an abusive relationship, frustrating problems about which he cannot seem to do anything.

Historia
Brilliant, irascible, and frequently frustrating to both his friends and his long-suffering bosses, John Rebus has made the dark places of Edinburgh his home for over two decades. The Beat Goes On collects all of Ian Rankin's Rebus short stories for the first time, including two never-before-published tales written specifically for this collection.

Historia
Wired called Dr. Fei-Fei Li “one of a tiny group of scientists—a group perhaps small enough to fit around a kitchen table—who are responsible for AI’s recent remarkable advances.” Known to the world as the creator of ImageNet, a key catalyst of modern artificial intelligence, Dr. Li has spent more than two decades at the forefront of the field. But her career in science was improbable from the start. The Worlds I See is the moving memoir of a scientist coming of age as an immigrant in America who finds her calling at the forefront of the AI revolution.

Self congratulatory PR piece for AI
Revisado: 03-02-24
This book was written with a fine vocabulary and a pretense of revealing the most superficial aspects of an immigrant’s family situation as a counterpoint to the unexamined and greedy pursuit of domination in the early development of artificial intelligence. It seemed like ChatGPT 3.0 in honor of a free wheeling pursuit of AI. It wanted to give plenty of repetitive lip-service to PC concerns about AI, without apology or atonement for changing he basic human experience and any expectation of privacy.
This book was propaganda at its most dangerous.
