I. Lonoff. At Lonoff's, Zuckerman meets Amy Bellette, a haunting young woman of indeterminate foreign background who turns out to be a former student of Lonoff's and who may also have been his mistress.

Intro to Roth
Revisado: 05-06-22
This was my first taste of Roth, and it DEFINITELY won't be my last. I started out by really liking the book - the general, honest depictions of being a human in the U.S.A. after WWII, and more specifically, a Jew in that time and place that did not personally go through the persecution in Germany. What it means to take liberties in being yourself as well as artistically and how that can affect your family and community. Very funny in an everyday sort of way, imaginative and unpredictable. By the end I loved it rather than liked, and will 100% be reading more Roth.

I Understand The Cult Following This Has!
Revisado: 04-13-22
Very good and I will think back on it many times for it's creativity and themes/morals. Normally I knock a star off of a very good story if I didn't feel some passion for the characters, which I did not in this book, BUT this one so strongly touched me on an emotional level regarding the points it was making about humanity and society that my norm was overridden. The characters are just vehicles for the bigger players/ideas to be shared here: when is something truly outdated, and when are we moving forward to our own detriment? When do you let go of something even when you know it's right? This would be a great book club pick if the group were up for a longer read, it comes in around 450 pgs. If you are offended by the questioning of religious beliefs this is not for you.

Classic Flowery Prose
Revisado: 08-31-21
Narration was very well done for each character. The wording is done very eloquently, so if you like words, then this is a go. I'm not sure if the author intended me to hate the main character as much as I did, but if so, she did a wonderful job. Frankenstein's "monster", on the other hand, completely captured my heart. A thoughtful, Gothic look at humanity (or the lack thereof). A must read even if solely for it's groundbreaking place in sci-fi and horror fictional history.

Supurb Story + Narration, Minus Background Music
Revisado: 07-16-21
I loved everything about this. Each character was fleshed out. Thought-provoking, a little mystery, a bit of mysticism, a little romance, some coming of age, chuckles thrown in from a perfectly roguish supporting character with a heart of gold, an unlikely hero, a bad guy to loathe. And THE WRITING. Wonderful. Narration was VERY good, spanish pronunciations excellent, including an accent from Spain, though as everyone wise has stated, the background music detracts from some of the most heartfelt and climactic scenes, try to ignore it.

Switters is a contradiction for all seasons: an anarchist who works for the government, a pacifist who carries a gun, a vegetarian who sops up ham gravy, a cyberwhiz who hates computers, a robust bon vivant who can be as squeamish as any fop, a man who, though obsessed with the preservation of innocence, is aching to deflower his high-school-age stepsister (only to become equally enamored of a nun ten years his senior). Yet there is nothing remotely wishy-washy about Switters. He doesn't merely pack a pistol. He is a pistol.

Fiercely Wordy
Revisado: 07-16-21
Instead of 1 liners, this book is full of 3-5 liners. Very fun, but the vocabulary is so wordy it completely overshadows the plot. I enjoyed it best read in small bursts where I could take in each snippet of thought. There are soooo many I wanted to remember, I'll definitely be reading it again. If you're abject to crude thoughts and cussing, the true gold nuggets also all through this won't be for you.

Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Elsa must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

I didn't like any of the characters. They all felt flat. Of the two main characters, beauty was too self-defining and indicative of love to one, and the other was a teenage brat. There was nothing necessarily bad about the writing itself, just didn't jump off the page or grab my interest, and I am currently very interested in the setting of this story, the Dustbowl. Narration was good.

Historia
Ignatius Perrish spent the night drunk and doing terrible things. He woke up the next morning with a thunderous hangover, a raging headache, and a pair of horns growing from his temples. At first Ig thought the horns were a hallucination, the product of a mind damaged by rage and grief. He had spent the last year in a lonely, private purgatory, following the death of his beloved, Merrin Williams, who was raped and murdered under inexplicable circumstances.

Why Is This My First Time Reading Joe Hill?!!
Revisado: 10-25-20
It certainly won't be my last. I couldn't put this down. I've read (listened to) a lot of good books lately, but this is the first one in a long time that kept me up at night. Think Carl Haiassen, add some supernatural aspects and subtract the Floridians. Morbid pleasure at people getting what they deserve. Wonderful writing. Good narration.

Why Did I Put Off Reading This for 20 Years?!
Revisado: 06-05-20
A well thought out analysis of a range of standard human emotions wrapped in a palatable fictional package making it easier to swallow than reading straight philosophy. One I will definitely be reading again. Very much enjoyed the look into Russian society from 150 years ago, and to see it's fascinating how many questions and worries span all cultures and times. We are still the same.

Love for All of Senlin's Crew
Revisado: 10-21-19
The real beauty of Senlin's Crew is how the author is able to work in so many true observations on life and humanity through their fictitious selves and journeys. Absolutely adore. I look forward to the third installment, and will be re-reading the series to try catch more of Bancroft's nuggets of wisdom more firmly.
