Historia
This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides - or are chosen.

Fascinating and gripping
Revisado: 04-06-25
Despite its daunting length, I’ve listened to this book twice. It just fascinates me, especially after COVID. The characters are rich and believable. King makes you feel all the feelings, makes you care and hate and fear. That’s the goal of an author I guess. This book is about life, love, good and evil, society, government, relationships, survival. I probably don’t even understand all that King tries to say with it. But I will listen to it again.

Revisado: 01-02-23
Even though this is Young Adult, the story and ideas are wonderful! The most fascinating story of future civilization I've read. I was eager to go to to each next book in the series. Great read/listen.

It's Young Adult, so....
Revisado: 01-02-23
If I was a Young Adult myself, I probably would have enjoyed this book more. I made it through it and did care about the main character, so that, to me, makes it a good book.

Revisado: 01-02-23
Not sure why this one is so popular. I tried to listen to it but wow. Just couldn't make it all the way through it. I made it an hour and a half. Maybe I'll try again later....Martians and astroids and silliness...

Well-written, long, no resolution.Great reader!
Revisado: 01-02-23
The reader, Roy Dotrice, really steals the show with this series! Apparently he won a Guinness Book of Records record for reading the most characters in a book. He is wonderful and really brings this book to life! I came to love the characters, but the books in this series are just too long, dark, and brutal for me. If there are more books, I hope that things get more resolved. There were story lines that he never got back to in this book and I was diappointed about that. But definitely worth reading the 5 books in this series so far!
Warning: if you've made it to Book 5 you know, but there's a lot of brutality, including sexual brutality against women and young girls in these books. It was a bit hard to read at times.

Revisado: 04-19-22
Full of twists, beautifully written and beautifully read. The Count is clever and as sly as James Bond-and so creative!! Worth the 53-hour commitment for the unabridged version. Definitely one of my all-time favorites. Set in the time of Napoleon it is historical fiction.

Historia
Golden Globe nominee Scarlett Johansson ( Lost in Translation, Girl with a Pearl Earring) brings a palpable sense of joy and exuberance to her performance of Lewis Carroll's enduring classic Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The young and imaginative Alice grows weary of her storybook, one "without pictures or conversations", and follows a hasty hare underground - to come face to face with a host of strange and fantastic characters.

Silly and sweet
Revisado: 03-07-22
I read this as an adult, having seen the Disney and Johnny Depp versions because I’m reading all of the books listed in the Book of Books (100 most popular books in America.). Being an adult and knowing the story, I was not very interested but appreciate the detail in the book that is not translated in movies and enjoyed the sweet ending. VERY well done by Scarlett Johansson!

Set in Greenwich Village, Harlem, and France, Another Country tells the story of the suicide of jazz-musician Rufus Scott and the friends who search for an understanding of his life and death, discovering uncomfortable truths about themselves along the way. Another Country is a work that is as powerful today as it was 40 years ago - and expertly narrated by Dion Graham.

Well-written. Like a black Gatsby, 30yrs later.
Revisado: 02-20-22
Sexy. Raw. Gritty. This book really reminded me of the drinking, partying, swirling lifestyle of Gatsby characters. Also set in Manhattan, but in the 50s with mostly black characters, this is an entertaining read. Lots of black against white angst. Lots of sex. This book makes you think along with the characters.

Historia
1941. Audrey Coltrane has always wanted to fly. It's why she implored her father to teach her at the little airfield back home in Texas. It’s why she signed up to train military pilots in Hawaii when the war in Europe began. And it’s why she insists she is not interested in any dream-derailing romantic involvements, even with the disarming Lieutenant James Hart, who fast becomes a friend as treasured as the women with whom she flies. Then one fateful day, she gets caught in the air over Pearl Harbor just as the bombs begin to fall, and suddenly, nowhere feels safe.

Sappy, predictable, boring
Revisado: 02-20-22
I read this for book club but had a hard time finishing it. The narrator’s voice, with a sickening Southern drawl, was painful for me. But the writing was equally bad. Sugary sweet and painfully cliche. Run from this one! If you want a great read about women’s roles in WWII, try Our Mother’s War by Emily Yellin.

Historia
It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

A lot of things that happen in this book you’ve heard before about Nazi Germany but the story is beautifully written with a fresh twist on the narrator. You haven’t heard a story told like this before!! Characters are well-developed.
