This might be the best example of friends-to-lovers I’ve ever seen. You absolutely do not need to have read the first book of the series to enjoy this one. Tennyson is a character I just found myself rooting for from start to finish - she’s on a mission to take the reins of her life and it’s really exciting to watch her journey. This book, it has to be said, starts in *exactly* the right spot, so you get thrown straight into the action. Loved seeing these characters evolve and find their HEA, even though I absolutely wanted to reach into my phone and shout at Dominic on and off throughout, what a loveable dummy who can’t see what’s right in front of his nose.

Book 8 - John Matthew and Xhex
I mean, it’s a brotherhood of seven foot tall bazillionaire vampires, each with hidden emotional depth and a wardrobe made entirely of leather, literally fighting to save their world while falling in love, conveniently, one at a time and in quick succession. Fantastic audio performance by Jim Frangione who, I think, does all of them.
DO NOT START HERE, please start at Book 1 (Dark Lover). I cannot imagine trying to jump into this cold without the backstory on both John Matthew and Xhex. Lots of content warnings here, especially on violence and assault.
A couple of notes about this instalment in particular:
While it’s John Matthew and Xhex’s story, you get so much about the other characters here, so it’s a really rich tapestry in an extremely well-built world.
Xhex is so hardcore, it’s amazing to get to spend time with her character in this book.
I have been a big John Matthew fan all along, but you see a totally new side of him in this book, and it’s not one that I love. Unlike many of the other vampires’ mates, Xhex is absolutely a warrior and a badass in her own right, and the journey for John Matthew (and honestly, the rest of the brotherhood) to recognise her strength and her rightful place in their world is a little too long and exhausting to my 2023 ears (it’s just so much patriarchy, and while they get to the right place, the long and arduous path out of misogyny made me tired).

This is a really interesting one. Some things that I loved about it - fantastic audio performance, always enjoy seeing a mid-size city featured (it’s not set in New York, London, LA or a small town, so it felt like a breath of fresh air), and a romantic bargain with specific terms that you just know the main characters are absolutely going to break. Leeanne Slade absolutely mastered the dark moment in this one - I had no idea how these characters were going to sort everything out and navigate their way through it. While I absolutely did spend much of the book just wanting to grab the heroine and tell her what was so obvious to the reader, she’s on an important journey of personal growth and self-discovery that feels fulfilling and makes the HEA even sweeter.
