Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Elsa must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

Living History
Revisado: 04-08-21
My parents both lived through the Depression. My Dad in the Oklahoma Dust Bowl. He had to drop out of school to work the farm because his Dad died in 1928. As I read this book, I was struck by the fact that I do not remember either of them telling us stories about how bad it was. They shared the fun things with us. I knew through history that it was not fun. Your book brought that home, but more than that it made me realize how resilient my parents were. Thank you. Also, Julia Whelan is an amazing narrator.

Fuller understanding
Revisado: 09-02-20
I must confess I had envisioned Kamala Harris as the next US Attorney General doing the hard work of rebuilding that office. I read the book to learn more about her and now believe she was the right pick for the Vice Presidency.

Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

One of the most meaningful books I have ever read. I love history but this book goes beyond history capturing the true impact on humanity of the forces that shape and challenge us.
