Historia
So begins Kaikeyi’s story. The only daughter of the kingdom of Kekaya, she is raised on legends of the gods: how they churned the vast ocean to obtain the nectar of immortality, how they vanquish evil and ensure the land of Bharat prospers, and how they offer powerful boons to the devout and the wise. Yet she watches as her father unceremoniously banishes her mother, listens as her own worth is reduced to how great a marriage alliance she can secure. And when she calls upon the gods for help, they never seem to hear.

Historia
The Supreme Court has always had the authority to issue emergency rulings in exceptional circumstances. But since 2017, the Court has dramatically expanded its use of the behind-the-scenes “shadow docket,” regularly making decisions that affect millions of Americans without public hearings and without explanation, through cryptic late-night rulings that leave lawyers—and citizens—scrambling. But Americans of all political stripes should be worried about what the shadow docket portends for the rule of law, argues Supreme Court expert Stephen Vladeck.

A Machiavellian Legal Tale
Revisado: 11-11-24
This is more than an eye opening exposé of the Robert’s Court. The author painstakingly explains the origins behind Supreme Court practices and outcomes in the past and present that threaten its legitimacy. A painful but necessary reminder that this institution is vulnerable to political capture even if most of the action is behind the scenes.

Historia
In the fifth century BC, a global superpower was determined to bring truth and order to what it regarded as two terrorist states. The superpower was Persia, incomparably rich in ambition, gold, and men. The terrorist states were Athens and Sparta, eccentric cities in a poor and mountainous backwater: Greece. The story of how their citizens took on the Great King of Persia, and thereby saved not only themselves, but Western civilization as well, is as heart-stopping and fateful as any episode in history.

Historia
At the approach of the first millennium, the Christians of Europe did not seem likely candidates for future greatness. They saw no future beyond the widely anticipated Second Coming of Christ. But when the world did not end, the peoples of Western Europe suddenly found themselves with no choice but to begin the heroic task of building a Jerusalem on Earth. In The Forge of Christendom, Tom Holland masterfully describes this remarkable new age, a time of caliphs and Viking sea kings, the spread of castles, and the invention of knighthood.

A Drama Filled Account of the Christian Jihad

The narrator was spectacular in bringing to life the struggles between the Holy Roman Emperors and the Popes as well as exposing little known aspects of the battles between Rome and Constantinople. That these set the stage for the crusade against Islam is particularly striking.

This presenter brings the ancient world to life in a very coherent and creative way. He could be an actor as well as a classicist. I plan to listen again for what I missed.

Historia
Spies is the history of the secret war that Russia and the West have been waging for a century. Espionage, sabotage, and subversion were the Kremlin’s means to equalize the imbalance of resources between the East and West before, during, and after the Cold War. There was nothing “unprecedented” about Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election. It was simply business as usual, new means used for old ends.

Historia
According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch (the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655, before she exploded), the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner. So the armies of Good and Evil are amassing, Atlantis is rising, frogs are falling, tempers are flaring. Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan.

Very original but repetitive
Revisado: 04-24-22
This book argues convincingly that we view modern day power structures through the outdated framework of bible based European myth. The best parts introduce new archeological evidence that societies have myriad organizing structures not just the ones we are familiar with. The snarky comments liven the narrative but the book needed an editor to STOP it somewhere, maybe after the discussion of Roman law, to avoid so many of the same arguments being presented over and over again.
