Historia
There was a time during Donald Davis's college freshman year when he wasn't really sure if he wanted to claim his hometown of Sulpher Springs, North Carolina. But a boy by the name of Stanley Easter changed his mind. "The year after that," he recalls, "I did go home from college for Thanksgiving. In fact, I had now become so proud of where I was from that I could hardly wait to get home. I no longer had to lie about where I was from. The world of childhood was quickly becoming a dear place to visit."

Davis always delivers his stories in the first person. His life stories help the listener to live (for the moment) in another era

Historia
Hector Munro, writing under the pseudonym of Saki, is justly renowned for his urbane and witty short stories. His eccentric characters, humorous dialogue and engaging domestic situations all reveal a penetrating and sometimes disturbing insight into human nature. As a quixotic tour guide, Saki leads the reader from garden party to pig sty to political convention with the ease of one who is intimately familiar with the cares and foibles of the human condition, showing us this vista of life through the well tempered lens of his gentle, British irony. In this definitive collection of stories we can browse and sightsee at our leisure, cross borders of fresh insight, admire and enjoy each whimsical tale as we journey through the imaginative landscape of a truly artful writer.

Humor like P. D. Wodehouse

So glad ‘Audible’ suggested this title/ Author.
A good humorist is so rare — (much easier to write drama, perhaps)
Saki — interesting pen name!
His protagonists/ antagonists love thru universal themes. So although this was written 100+ years ago, his personalities and humor hits home.

Historia
If you've ever been in the car while a loved one was learning to drive, then think of this as cheap therapy! Learning to drive has occasioned emotions ranging from reasonable caution to unbridled terror. Learning under the watchful eye of one's spouse is an added challenge. Undertaking the task with anxious children in the backseat can only heighten the sensory richness of the moment.

My favorite storyteller
Revisado: 06-15-23
Donald Davis has the knack of telling a story of childhood (and his own son’s childhood) with heartwarming characters. For younger people, Donald Davis is a ‘historian’ of what the 1940s to 1960s was like in the rural south

Historia
In "The Time Machine", Davis offers us both the story of the reunion and the collectively remembered story of his classmates' senior year. In 1962, Waynesville, North Carolina, was that small town where the school principal also served as a teacher, the football coach, and the Sunday-school superintendent. One classmate spends his time in the bar wishing for a time machine, so he can go back to his teenage years with his accumulated experience.

Historia
We all know someone like them: women whose lives revolve around their cats. Here Donald Davis paints verbal portraits of two very different women in his life who shared a fiercely unshakable sense of priorities. It was simply understood that the cats came first, and once you accepted that, everything else made perfect sense. Employing his trademark Carolina drawl, droll wit, and sharp observations, Davis is in top form here as he pays homage to these two remarkable women and their devotion to their feline families.

First heard Davis’ storytelling on NPR in 1990s
Revisado: 05-10-23
Cats — don’t let that title fool you. Of course, this is a people-first storybook. (Although, I did hope for more about the pigs!)
So precious — Donald paces his storytelling so they are Carefully told; be prepared to shed a tear inside or out.
PS — the first story I heard by Donald Davis was titled “Listening for the Crack of Dawn” — still one of my favorites
