Historia
Successful New York psychiatrist Richard Gallagher was skeptical yet intrigued when a hard-nosed, no-nonsense Catholic priest asked him to examine a woman for a possible exorcism. Meeting her, Gallagher was astonished. The woman’s behavior defied logic. This remarkable case was the first of many that Gallagher would encounter. Sought after today by leaders of all faiths—ministers, priests, rabbis and imams, Gallagher has spent a quarter-century studying demonic activity and exorcisms throughout history and has witnessed more cases than any other psychiatrist in the world today.

Historia
Abandoned by her family, alone on the wrong side of the color line with little to call her own, Eliza Meeks is coming to terms with what she does have. It’s a gift for communicating with animals. To some, she’s a magical tender. To others, a she-devil. To a talent prospector, she’s a crowd-drawing oddity. And the Bacchanal Carnival is Eliza’s ticket out of the swamp trap of Baton Rouge. Among fortune-tellers, carnies, barkers, and folks even stranger than herself, Eliza finds a new home. But the Bacchanal is no ordinary carnival. An ancient demon has a home there too.

Inspired, but Muddy
Revisado: 01-17-22
It's clear Bacchanal was heavily influenced by The Night Circus, but the author bit off more than she could chew. The story meandered and did not need to go on for as long as it did. There were too many elements jostling for attention and the end result was a muddy, confusing mess.
Also, the climax was less than excited, seemed to be over rather quickly, and not worth the looooooong build-up it took getting there.
I really wanted to like this book, but it took me MONTHS to finish. It was a chore.

Hated it.
Revisado: 10-13-21
The idea of the origins of Black people was interesting, but one I've heard before. This work was poorly executed and a massive chore to finish. I hated the characters, hated their actions, hated their background stories. I just hated it!
Anf the voice actor was hard to understand. He sounded as if he were mumble rapping instead of narrating a story. Ugh. What WAS this mess??

It Tried. It Really Did.
Revisado: 04-10-21
There were a lot of really important themes that were touched on in this book, but that is a part of the issue. The book probably should have been at least 50-100 pages longer to properly address all the themes it touched on in passing. There needed to be more development. Instead, the story was rushed and messy.
It was also nonsensical. I understand having to move the plot along, but how ignorant can some parents be? It's as if they were literally born yesterday.
And some plot points were completely unnecessary and should have been reworked, namely the Gabby character. She was absolutely random for no reason.
Meh.

Historia
Twenty-five years ago, Maggie Holt and her parents, Ewan and Jess, moved into Baneberry Hall, a rambling Victorian estate in the Vermont woods. Three weeks later they fled in the dead of night, an ordeal Ewan later recounted in a nonfiction book called House of Horrors. His horror memoir of ghostly happenings and encounters with malevolent spirits became a worldwide phenomenon, rivaling The Amityville Horror in popularity — and skepticism.

A Wasted Credit
Revisado: 01-04-21
How many people did Riley Sager pay to give this boring, bland, mayo-flavored "novel" positive reviews?
I'm so annoyed by the mediocrity that is this mess.
It was slow, hard to finish, and I didn't like any of the characters.
Dear me. This book makes my teeth itch.

HORRIBLE
Revisado: 11-30-20
I'm not sure what happened between this book and the last, but my God this is horrible. It's preachy and has an agenda and I couldn't get past 25%. Will Wheaton is a HORRIBLE voice actor and I should have known this would be garbage from the get-go.

Horrible Cartoon-Like Narrator
Revisado: 11-22-20
I couldn't even get into the story because the voice actress sounds like she is pining for a walk-on role on The Animaniacs reboot. She is the worst and completely distracts from the story. My word.
