Phillips creates a character, Sam, and then deconstructs her. The metaphoric bear is jealousy, envy, fear of loss and ultimately a real bear, not anthropomorphic. The book is almost too sorrowful to recommend. Phillips’ books incooorate the natural world as a principal.

A failed metaphor for South Africa. Utterly disgusting characters except the police investigator. The NYT suggested this was a metaphor for post apartheid South Africa. Really? The primary female characters were either ignorant, delusional or drunk. I finished it waiting for redemption or Godot. Got neither. Save yourself and read Nadine Gordimer.

Chris Bohjalian’s continues his fall from Midwives, a very good book, to schlock disguised as literature. Another ridiculous storyline riding on the back of Diana. I did like the further downfall of the Marjorie Taylor Greene character but was hoping she would also take a bullet. Save your credit and wait for the B movie to stream.

The complexity of history

Elegant and tightly written, but odd in t leaps of time, perhaps the translation. A wonderful history of the colonisation of East Africa, the role of native Africans in internecine wars and a family tale. Beautifully narrated.
