Historia
This near-future trilogy is the first chance for English-speaking listeners to experience this multiple-award-winning phenomenon from Cixin Liu, China's most beloved science fiction author. In The Dark Forest, Earth is reeling from the revelation of a coming alien invasion - in just four centuries' time. The aliens' human collaborators may have been defeated, but the presence of the sophons, the subatomic particles that allow Trisolaris instant access to all human information, means that Earth's defense plans are totally exposed to the enemy.

Terrible Translation
Revisado: 06-19-23
The plot is great, but the translation is terrible. It's clumsy and descriptions at times are contadictory. Having been immersed in Chinese culture for many years, it was still unbearable to listen to.

Historia
Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking, and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

Historia
More than 3,000 years have passed since the first events recorded in Dune. Only one link survives with those tumultuous times: the grotesque figure of Leto Atreides, son of the prophet Paul Muad'Dib, and now the virtually immortal God Emperor of Dune. He alone understands the future, and he knows with a terrible certainty that the evolution of his race is at an end unless he can breed new qualities into his species.

Simon Vance did the best he could
Revisado: 10-15-22
With series that span multiple large works it's inevitable that some parts will fall flat. This was the case with book 4. I only finished it because I have been listening with a companion and knew they would not want to skip this book. Listening was so difficult that I read the plot on Wikipedia so I didn't need to pay attention to most of the story. Simon Vance was the only thing that made this book bearable.

Not worth the $5, even for three books
Revisado: 10-15-22
The story is good enough. However...
-Smith has a weird fixation with the whole 'brothers in arms' idea. He belabors the sentiment numerous times in each book and with several characters. It gets very stale pretty quickly.
-I can't tell if it's the narrator or the writer, but nearly every character of consequence sounds like a whining child multiple times throughout the three books.
-His writing seems more fit for younger readers/listeners who need everything spelled out for them all the time, or for listeners who are used to multitasking and sometimes miss a few scenes.
-Pinchot is terrible with female voices. I've listened to his narration for other books, and each female character is voiced the exact same way no matter whether the author writes a strong or weak female character and dialogue.
-Pinchot even narrates male characters as petulant children, which I don't remember that being the case with other books he's narrated.
The only reason I stuck with the books was that I did like the basic plot and all three were only $5. I will not be reading or listening to the remainder of the series.

Historia
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Historia
Neal Stephenson is a blazing new force on the sci-fi scene. With the groundbreaking cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, he has "vaulted onto the literary stage." It weaves virtual reality, Sumerian myth, and just about everything in between with a cool, hip cybersensibility - in short, it is the gigathriller of the information age.

Sex scene is ridiculous
Revisado: 09-28-21
I really wish cis-gendered men would stop writing about the female sexual experience, because it seems they are only writing about the fake orgasms they've given to their partners. Otherwise, not so bad for one of his first writing endeavors. Luckily he learned this lesson by the time he wrote The Baroque Cycle. Also, the chapters are split up a bit oddly.

Good book. I like Philip Pullman, but Sheen makes it come to life in a whole new way. His Dark Materials was good, but the performance was average. There was definitely a difference in Sheen's performance that made it magical. Eagerly awaiting the final book.
