It started as one night. It turned into a friendship. Then Harley became my everything. She owns me, heart, mind and body. And for a few brief days, our future seems bright and certain. Until, the past wraps its arms around us in so many terrible ways. Someone I never expected to see again reappears in my life. Trying to keep us apart. I’ll do anything for her, but the question is - will anything even be enough?

Anti choice propaganda
Revisado: 03-06-23
Look I don’t read Blakey’s stuff expecting to find much feminism or progressive depictions of women but Jesus this is some misogynistic crap. The main character’s disdain for even the topic of abortion makes it pretty clear how Blakey feels. Also as someone who is “older” and hoping to become pregnant I didn’t appreciate the characters musings about why her paramour’s mother had so many stillbirths. Know your audience, Lauren. Can’t even finish it. You just lost a fan.

Good story, if ultimately predictable
Revisado: 06-24-16
Well written and very well narrated story. Ending is a bit predictable which made it less exciting towards than I would have liked. Still, a good balance of mystery and romance without being to gruesome or cheesy.

Historia
Welcome to winter in Three Pines, a picturesque village in Quebec, where the villagers are preparing for a traditional country Christmas, and someone is preparing for murder. No one liked CC de Poitiers. Not her quiet husband, not her spineless lover, not her pathetic daughter - and certainly none of the residents of Three Pines. CC de Poitiers managed to alienate everyone, right up until the moment of her death. When Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, of the Sûreté du Quebec, is called to investigate, he quickly realizes he's dealing with someone quite extraordinary.

Solid cozy mystery
Revisado: 07-16-15
I like mystery but can't take how dark many mysteries have become these days. The Inspector Gammache books aren't perfect and they drag at times but I think that is because Penny is developing her characters over a long arc of several books. I have to admit I did guess fairly early on who the killer was, but still enjoyed the rest of the book. The characters are really likable which is nice. I don't love the narrator but he's growing on me.

Historia
Born to a prominent Chicago judge and his stifled socialite wife, Mia Dennett moves against the grain as a young inner-city art teacher. One night, Mia enters a bar to meet her on-again, off-again boyfriend. But when he doesn't show, she unwisely leaves with an enigmatic stranger. With his smooth moves and modest wit, Colin Thatcher seems at first like a safe one-night stand. But following Colin home will turn out to be the worst mistake of Mia's life.

You Have Got to Be Kidding Me
Revisado: 03-10-15
Would you try another book from Mary Kubica and/or the narrators?
I will never read another book by this author. There was so much nonchalant racism and sexism in this book, I was offended pretty much the whole time. Kept waiting for the big "twist" at the end to redeem the author and it really didn't. I was also offended by the flagrant anti-choice agenda which came through on more than one occasion. Also the writing was mediocre at best.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Anything else.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator playing the mother bugged me when she would try to imitate an American accent. It was pretty bad. Periodically she'd slip into a bad southern drawl when speaking from the perspective of the detective. He was not southern.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Good Girl?
Definitely the anti-choice tirade, also the parts where she romanticized violence against women and the really racist way she described the book's only non-white character. So, yeah, the whole book.
Any additional comments?
Save your credit for something more thoughtful, socially aware and much better written.

Historia
The debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives. Every day the same. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

Revisado: 02-13-15
Not a bad story but I found all the characters dislikable. Hard to be on anybody's side. Also found characters to be pretty depressing. Saw the ending coming a mile away.

Great Story, But for All the Sexism
Revisado: 04-02-14
What did you like best about The Puppet Masters? What did you like least?
Heinlein writes compelling stories, very easy to get swept away. Definitely forward-thinking in terms of technology and space travel.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Puppet Masters?
When Sam was first overtaken by the alien.
Which scene was your favorite?
Sam's description of being controlled by his master.
Was The Puppet Masters worth the listening time?
Yes
Any additional comments?
Holy sexism, Batman. I read Stranger in a Strange Land as a child, and totally missed the memo on Heinlein's unapologetic sexism in his writing (even misogyny, at some points.) I get that Puppet Masters was written 60+ years ago, but it's really glaring at some points and has soured me some to Heinlein and his main character. He refers to women as "Females" throughout the book and talks about how we talk too much. The Old Man says that most women have minds of children. Also, the main character insists on describing the physical attributes of every woman he comes into contact with, quite lecherously.
Would have been a much stronger book, had it been written by someone who had an ounce of respect for women.

Gentle Enlightening
Revisado: 03-05-14
What made the experience of listening to The Road Less Traveled the most enjoyable?
I loved this book so much. Dr. Peck's insights are really profound. I'll have to listen to it again in the not-too-distant future, since i'm sure i'll get even more out of it on another go-round.
What about M. Scott Peck’s performance did you like?
He has a great speaking voice. Clear, comforting and serious at the same time.

Historia
The Introvert Advantage dispels common myths about introverts - they’re not necessarily shy, aloof, or antisocial - and explains how they are hardwired from birth to focus inward, so outside stimulation such as chitchat, phone calls, parties, or office meetings can easily become "too much". Most importantly, it thoroughly refutes many introverts’ belief that something is wrong with them. Instead, it helps them recognize their inner strengths - their analytical skills, ability to think outside the box, and strong powers of concentration.

Useful Information, Dry Writing
Revisado: 02-27-14
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I only got through about 2/3 of this book. It has some really useful information and also some sections that don't yet pertain to me (section on introverted children etc.) I think the reason I didn't finish it was because the writing was very dry and I found myself checking out a lot.
Were the concepts of this book easy to follow, or were they too technical?
The section on introvert brain chemistry was tough to follow. That's an area where a visual aid would help (tricky with an audiobook, i know). The rest was pretty straightforward.
How could the performance have been better?
I felt like the narrator was trying to compensate for the writing by selling it a little too hard. She sounded silly sometimes.
Did The Introvert Advantage inspire you to do anything?
I've been embracing my introversion more and respecting my needs more.
