Historia
Eliza Harris, a slave whose child is to be sold, escapes her beloved home on the Shelby plantation in Kentucky and heads North, eluding the hired slave catchers. Aided by the underground railroad, Quakers, and others opposed to the Fugitive Slave Act, Eliza, her son, and her husband George run toward Canada. As the Harrises flee to freedom, another slave, Uncle Tom, is sent "down the river" for sale. Too loyal to abuse his master's trust, too Christian to rebel, Tom wrenches himself from his family.

The narrator was very good. Every American should read this book. I'm not young and wish I'd read it decades ago.

i loved this book..... the story flowed and had much to say about the human condition but I thought the final scene was poor. If I were to recommend it to someone, I would tell them to rip off or delete the final chapter.

It's August 1984, and paperboy Christopher Stewart has gone missing. Hours later, 12-year-old Sammy Cox hurries home from his own paper route, red-faced and out of breath, hiding a terrible secret. Crystal, Sammy's 17-year-old sister, is worried by the disappearance but she also sees an opportunity: the Stewart case has echoes of an earlier unsolved disappearance of another boy, one town over. Crystal senses the makings of an award-winning essay, one that could win her a scholarship - and a ticket out of their small Iowa town.

Historia
Harriet Ann Jacob's autobiography documents her life as a slave and how she attained freedom for herself and her children. Harrowing in its descriptions of sexual abuse, Jacob's slave narrative is notable for the appeal it made to abolitionist women to open their eyes to the realities of slavery. Deemed too shocking for reading audiences at the time, the book was shelved before it was published in 1861 near the start of the Civil War.

Poor reader marred the story.
Revisado: 05-02-14
What disappointed you about The Wasted Vigil?
I found the story very over-drawn and anti-Moslem. Predictable and overly-violent.
If you’ve listened to books by Nadeem Aslam before, how does this one compare?
I thought the reader was poor. The voices he employed when the characters spoke were inconsistent and caricatures. Nearly offensive.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
There was some lovely writing along the way and many interesting details about Afghan life. I took them as true though I don't know if they are.
Any additional comments?
I will never buy an audiobook read by Basil Sands.

Historia
The Ephrussis were a grand banking family, as rich and respected as the Rothschilds, who “burned like a comet” in 19th-century Paris and Vienna society. Yet by the end of World War II, almost the only thing remaining of their vast empire was a collection of 264 wood and ivory carvings, none of them larger than a matchbox. The renowned ceramicist Edmund de Waal became the fifth generation to inherit this small and exquisite collection of netsuke. Entranced by their beauty and mystery, he determined to trace the story of his family through the story of the collection.

Excellent narration !
Revisado: 02-14-13
Would you consider the audio edition of The Hare with Amber Eyes to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version but I think the proper pronunciation of terms in German and Japanese added alot to the reading. Mr Maloney did a sensitive reading........ he expressed emotions in his voice that he read on the page. It brought it alive and made the listener smile and cry in turn. He also varied the pace to the fit with what he was reading.
What other book might you compare The Hare with Amber Eyes to and why?
I would compare it to The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion because it is a memoir that focuses on one particular part of the memoirist's life. Both writers could skillfully tell us the facts and then plunge us into despair or joy by their reaction to those facts.
Which character – as performed by Michael Maloney – was your favorite?
He was always speaking as Edmund de Waal.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I've listened to it twice and will probably revisit it in a few years. I also bought the print version so I can see the photographs and copy out some sections that were particularly meaningful to me.
Any additional comments?
A fantastic book!
