it's just super weird having a very young girl reading all these bukowski poems and with such disaffection. takes me out of it completely.

Went into it fully blind as I closed my eyes and scrolled to a title in my library at random. Within the first chapter I was entirely sucked in. Thematically, it's incredibly relevant to me right now with its examination of motherhood and the way it changes everything.

Had me in tears more than once, and holding them back probably half the time. Many excerpts of this story are downright haunting; Zhu Wen's description of her husband's ghosts, for example. Every line in this entire damn novel is just heartbreaking.

The prose is beautiful and the story is gripping despite being one of the "nothing actually happens"
type books; which may be why some have a hard time feeling vested, but personally I have such a weakness for these when executed well. It took me 11 days to read it (I've been super busy) and not a single day passed since my first dip where I haven't thought about it and yearned to immerse myself in Su Lan's world again, as narrated through the people fulfilling different roles in her mysterious and dynamic life; the planets orbiting her sun.

I ended up turning it off because it was too distracting to hear God, lord etc every 30 seconds

This absolutely gutted me. Found my heart quite literally racing several times. Halfway through the audio production I bought a physical book of Arthur Miller's collected plays. I got some shit I need to highlight.

Gave up on this joke of a book somewhere between the laughably naïve hypothetical about how an alcoholic self-disciplined himself into only being half an alcoholic a year later, and the verbatim sentence that we are the least disciplined generation in history, from infancy, except Asians and Africans. Also, what the fuck does that subtitle even mean?

Didn't really love this, couldn't stand the writing in terms of try-hard humor and exhausting pop-culture references. Felt like I was reading a string of Medium articles. But it made many fantastic points when it zoned in on the meat of the topics it was written around.

In this poignant short story, Chuck hits the nail on the head with his descriptions of the crippling depression and existential dread that only the intelligent seem to suffer and the lack of a remedy for it other than suicide or brain trauma. Happy idiots.

Took me a long time to finish this short read because honestly it just... kinda sucked. The premise was interesting but the execution was obnoxious as hell. Every character had more or less the same personality, and it was just loud, quippy personality porn the whole time.

Good read, but contrived with questionable editing at times. Interesting premise but just could've been better, less tropey, less happy perfect heroine-saves-the-world. Especially would've appreciated a book about sexism, feminism and female oppression to not have the predominant plot be an obnoxious, stereotypical love triangle romance.

I admit I couldn't get quite as in to the plot as I would have liked, it's not my genre, and often zoned out over probably important bits. Every sentence and word choice in this book was intricate and significant - which I love. I've read a lot of shit writing lately and the writing style and quality here was superb. Many lines stopped me in my tracks just to admire... How well written it was. The characters were interesting and well developed. I'll likely pick up some more of the series to follow the characters, but I don't know if I'll make it through 6 more detective stories. (less)
