Historia
Law professor James J. Duane became a viral sensation thanks to a 2008 lecture outlining the reasons why you should never agree to answer questions from the police - especially if you are innocent and wish to stay out of trouble with the law. In this timely, relevant, and pragmatic new book, he expands on that presentation, offering a vigorous defense of every citizen's constitutionally protected right to avoid self-incrimination.

not read as fast as YouTube videos
Revisado: 01-17-20
I was thinking I would have to play at .75x speed but the author spoke normally, which was weird at first, then got used to it.
To be honest, he does go into more details about people who spoke and got made but not as much detail as say other books that look at social events. The premise is pretty simple, don't answer questions to cops under any reason and tell them you want a lawyer.
For that, the book lays out it support in a lot of detail and iterates the main point that under no circumstances do you say anything to any Federal or state authority without a lawyer present.
Less than 3 hours may both seem like too short and not a lot of time but it gets the point across to where you'll remember the message.

Historia
The familiar world collapsed overnight. As the Transformation progressed, disasters occurred throughout the Earth. Materials changed their properties, new species of flora and fauna appeared. The Game converted our world into a huge dungeon, completely replacing the previous civilization. However, the alien plans for Earth began to go awry from the very beginning. The conversion was less successful than expected. An ordinary young man stole the bonus for the first gaming action, depriving the invaders of their perk.

Not the best
Revisado: 12-10-19
One of the weaker Sound Booth Theater productions. Even Justin couldn't completely negate the BS story and writing. Still, acceptable, but only because of the style Justin chooses for narration. With a weaker narrator, I would have turned the book off and asked for a refund.
The story is what happens when you go too far into Mary Sue or rather create a story where everything just falls into the main character's lap with little to no challenge. Somehow the main character was able to gain first kill achievement twice, out of all of the conflict and people fighting in the conflict, even through there was someone prepared to take the achievement.
The book draws heavily on telling, instead of showing. Why is the main character a bad ass? Because the book can't wait to make the main character OP AF, because that will be fun, right? It often is, but the combination creates low stakes which caused annoyances.
The story isn't all bad since it's style also lends towards fast pace. No time for character development when there are achievements to gain and bad guys to destroy easily.
I would compare it to Conan The Barbarian, except I am almost certain that series has character development and tension. This book is more like an action movie. Fun, but lacks substance.

why does a MMO need a save?
Revisado: 01-30-19
Story was interesting throughout so I wasn't bored and was able to finish the story.
Really, the only problem I had was when they brought up the save feature. The first time, I ignored it as I do most minor mistakes. The second and third time, I realized that they are in a MMO and a MMO would not need a save feature.
You could play it off as saving the brain state to restore but still seems weird as the device should not actually be writing to the brain. Or what I should say is that it should not need full access to the brain. Experiments were able to feed sounds, movements, and images to people or really just the impressions of them. It is understandable that the creators would want full control but it seems unnecessary and dangerous.
The author only needed to have the logout function disabled. There are likely other technical aspects of the devices. If we look at Old Man's War, then it does seem that the author either wanted to be different or wanted another take on a tried and true design.
It is a lot to write about for a minor gripe but every time it was brought up, it annoyed me more and more.

more than just meh
Revisado: 09-25-18
I feel like this is more of a 4 star, but the narrator sells it better than the ebook.
I should say that it is good. It is generic enough to setup ideas for later payoff or extension while not just being tacked on.
I guess as a fantasy series or book, this story would be pretty bland. I wouldn't have finished or pick up the next book if this wasn't litrpg. Not to say it was bad, just traditional. Reading fantasy is often where the novel differs rather than using the same old tired tropes.
Where this book shines is its attitude towards gamers or rather the main character is a mob from a world that does not have video games. The game feels realistic even if the main character breaks the mechanics of the game world. That the reader can suspend their disbelief and accept this is one thing I can respect. While listening, I didn't think, "Wait, this is a computer game world, how does the main character's magic carry over." Something that is not addressed since you would assume that it was the world stone but that ends up not being the case.
I am going to pick up the next book and see where it goes. I do feel like the authors are writing themselves into a corner, but then again expansion is not impossible, so it is possible that the story will organically grow into excellence.

Revisado: 09-05-18
The narrator is actually very good. Very pleasant voice with enough variation in the voices that you understand who the speaker is. The narrator flows very well and does not get monotonous.
The story is a start. I mean, I had my complaints with the first book when it was released. The first book is supposed to draw you in and while it is entertaining, it doesn't draw you in like the later books in the cradle series.
It ends when it just starts picking up leaving the mystery and journey to carry the reader or listener beyond the first in the series.
With that said, if you are a can of DBZ then you'll love this series. even more so because there is very little to no filler. Mostly action.

Meet Threadbare. He is 12 inches tall, full of fluff, and really, really bad at being a hero. Magically animated and discarded by his maker as a failed experiment, he is saved by a little girl. But she's got problems of her own, and he might not be able to help her. Fortunately for the little golem, he's quick to find allies, learn skills, gain levels, and survive horrible predicaments. Which is good, because his creator has a whole lot of enemies …

laugh out loud adorable
Revisado: 08-15-18
The kindle edition was interesting but never gripped me like listening. The book reminds me of old style fantasy, like young adult fantasy, I forget the series, but the land resembles Florida. The LitRPG elements do tend to add some humor but the system is wildly soft magic type.
What I mean is that the leveling and attribute system is convenient and it is to move the plot along. It is done well, but it is not as seamless as other LitRPG books.

Predictable; Definitely Jack Campbell story
Revisado: 01-22-16
I believe it is necessary part of crafting a story that you must set forth foreshadowing. I was worried that the story would run into some of the old Jack Campbell issues. I was disappointed that the series does have the same issues as his earlier Lost Fleet series. I understand that the author is attempting to show the motivations. I just think that it runs into the old show, don't tell adage.
Lost Fleet: "I would like to stick my appendage into that attractive woman, but I can't because HONOR!" It was okay the first book, but it sort of wore on after the 50th time. I could swear that he must have written that motivation every other page. It was one of the weaknesses and my friend mocked not only the book but me for enjoying the story.
I get it, you want to express that the main character can't have sexual relations with his officer while he is in command, because it would reflect poorly on her reputation. I got it the first time, I don't need constant reminders.
The problem is that I don't know if my criticism is valid or not. I think it is good story telling to provide clues and forecast events that may happen. The old, make the reader happy by allowing them to guess what is going to happen and then have that event happen.
The problem is that if you provide too many clues then the protagonist seems mentally handicapped. The author attempts to provide emotion and the narration does a good job, but all I can think about is how the main character lacks all the intelligence.
It is almost a running joke. It was okay in the first book, the arc was, "Oh I can't be in love with a mage, therefore I'm not." Then in the second book it turned into, "Oh I love a mage, but we can't have the sexual relations, because marriage!" Finally, in this book, it is, "I don't think I'm attractive, therefore I'm not and damned anyone who says I am." Not to mention the series running gag of, "My parents hate me and it is all their fault for not loving me." I swear, there are times when the main character is so emotion that I think that the author is either attempting to suggest that she is about to start her cycle or she is already with child.
It is annoying, Jack Campbell, as badass as his sequences and pacing can be is such an repetitive author. With a better editor or reading group, he could be the next Jim Butcher, but the repetition kills it. The repetition kills the series. It wears on the reader and it becomes the only thing the reader can remember. The reader hates the author for this. The reader hates the series for this.
It is awkward. So very awkward. I will make some predictions. I predict that the lady mage (can't give spelling since only have audio version) has a child and that was the reason she was unable to leave with the couple from the capital. Here is why I think this. You are to assume, I believe that she meant her boyfriend or girlfriend. This is partly why it is so confusing and why it is so annoying. The author puts forth enough clues that you should be able to determine the motivations of the characters, but goes a step beyond by assuming you are mentally challenged as the main characters.
The lady mage asks if the main character is with Alain's (the mage) child. It is commented (repeatedly as always) that the lady mage is very attractive. The question you have to ask is how can it be that in a world where Senior level management are treated as Gods and Mages are themselves told to take whatever they desire, someone as attractive as the lady mage would go unspoiled, to put it as in as polite terms as possible. The answer is that you would have George RR Martin up in there or at least in a better book. The odds that she is without child is slim, the odds that she would risk everything for simply a love one is great, but not as great as a child.
Jack Campbell's style is good enough. The action scenes are good enough. The tension is good enough. The romance is poor. The repetition is annoying. The pacing is good enough. The humor is almost offensive because it is stupidly sitcom. Women right and moody, Man confused *cue laugh track*. I would rather be punched in the crouch. I almost wish there was an option to replace every sitcom instance, so that the story could be saved.
Is this a good story? Yes, I think so. It has many flaws, but like Jim Butcher, the pacing saves it I think. I just wish Jack Campbell borrowed more character development from Jim Butcher. Character development in this series has been terrible. Okay, I have read enough good books that I recognize that the author is putting beats in the story that should be in a story. The problem is that you aren't normally supposed to recognize them. The characters should flow with the story and the motivations should not be told. With better authors, character development happens within the story and solves to both progress the story and provide insight into the characters by how they handle conflict. This author decides the best way to handle character development is to beat the reader to death with a blunt object until they are too dead to realize what is happening.

Story within Story within Story
Revisado: 04-25-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
The epic-ness of the story is that it is reminiscent of the oral tradition of story telling. There are at times three sub levels of story telling which, in my opinion is epic in and of itself. The fact that the main character is telling a story (2nd level) and relates stories within his story told by other characters (3rd level) is quite entertaining. The frustrating part is wanting to hear more about the in-verse stories and in-verse history.
The magical systems are very interesting and the "science" behind the most common magic is interesting. The naming magic system, I think is better than other stories where it is used. It is not played up, since it is so incredibly hard to do.
The story does sometimes subvert some tropes, which is interesting. The main character is both talented and fallible. The character flaws does sometimes question his veracity with his stories, but regardless is entertaining.
What does Nick Podehl bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The narrator sets the mood of the characters and setting very well. At no point was I bored with the performance.
