A beautiful book of wonder and grace
Revisado: 03-19-25
I loved this book! It was full of life, whether that life be restful or funny or distressful or sad. Indeed, it paints a picture of life as in the past, but it also gives you the wherewithal to deal with life today, even in the most trying of circumstances (think Local and Grateful). And the reading of Dermot Crowley is extraordinarily beautiful! Ah, this is happiness.

Historia
This is not an audiobook about Saint Augustine. In a way, it's an audiobook Augustine has written about each of us. Popular speaker and award-winning author James K. A. Smith has spent time on the road with Augustine, and he invites us to take this journey, too, for this ancient African thinker knows far more about us than we might expect. Following Smith's successful You Are What You Love, this audiobook shows how Augustine can be a pilgrim guide to a spirituality that meets the complicated world we live in.

Rich thoughts almost too thick for just listening
Revisado: 02-07-25
I both read and listened to this book at the same time, usually reading after listening—it was just too rich (I mean that positively) to listen and let thoughts pass. It needs meditation and reflection with it, but with the two together bears gifts of instruction and meditation. It is classic Jamie Smith with its fascinating references to popular culture along with interpretations of Augustine, and Michael Page is, as always, a fine reader.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

A wonderful story with excellent writing. And Tom Hanks is such a gift of a performer, even in simply reading a story.

When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Bravo! Fabulous!
Revisado: 08-19-24
What a beautiful story and wonderfully read story. I will listen to this again, and read the book as well. The profound human experiences are expressed here, and the response is to experience sadness, laughter, intrigue, anger at injustice and human hatred, and so much more. Exceptional!

Historia
For all the literature about Adolf Hitler, there have been just four seminal biographies; this is the fifth, a landmark work that sheds important new light on Hitler himself. Drawing on previously unseen papers and a wealth of recent scholarly research, Volker Ullrich reveals the man behind the public persona, from Hitler's childhood, to his failures as a young man in Vienna, to his experiences during the First World War, to his rise as a far-right party leader.

EXHAUSTIBLY Thorough, Highly Informative
Revisado: 08-13-24
This was a wonderful beginning biography. At times it could get (for the non-professional-historian) exhaustibly—or exhaustingly?!—thorough. Yet it was excellent, and the reading matched it. I look forward (in a fearful and sad way) to the sequel and (thankfully) downfall.

Historia
Hated and hailed, excoriated and revered, Abraham Lincoln was at the pinnacle of American power when secessionists gave no quarter in a clash of visions bound up with money, race, identity, and faith. In him we can see the possibilities of the presidency as well as its limitations. This book tells the story of Lincoln from his birth on the Kentucky frontier to his leadership during the Civil War to his tragic assassination: his rise, his self-education, his loves, his bouts of depression, his political failures, his deepening faith, and his persistent conviction that slavery must end.

A fabulous biography of an extraordinary man
Revisado: 10-06-23
I thoroughly enjoyed this biography and Meacham’s reading. It recounted Lincoln’s weaknesses and missteps, but also his slurs that guided unequalled political moves that led a nation toward justice. I was sorry to come to the end of this remarkable life. What helps me move on is now turning to another great of the same generation, Frederick Douglass.

A Meditation on Life
Revisado: 09-05-23
First of all, though not most importantly, the match of reader and story was beautiful. I did at times listen to it at 1.2 speed, but even then the reading was wonderful to my ears.
The story is a meditation on life, with support by Bonhoeffer and Kierkegaard, which I so appreciated. Love, despair, stuck-in-a-rut-ness, beauty, God, change and more—all are there and might have one stopping to reflect for a time. I was sorry that the book ended for it blessed my life for many days.

Historia
Set in the aftermath of the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745, Kidnapped (1886) sustains a gripping narrative. It is told by David Balfour, a young Whig and Lowlander, who is tracked by his miserly uncle, survives attempted murder, kidnap and shipwreck and, in the company of Alan Breck, a Jacobite, escapes through the Highlands.

Historia
Franciscan priest Richard Rohr feels that there is no more challenging spiritual issue than the “problem of the self". Most of contemporary spiritual teaching, he believes, is still trying to inspire and fortify the private self, the autonomous "I". Even much church work is trying to evangelize and sacramentalize what many would call "the false self." Basic transformation is not expected, but merely a new set of beliefs and practices or loyal membership in a new group.

A Fundamental Life-Teaching to Be Grown Into
Revisado: 05-10-23
USA Americans, myself included, are all affected by this culture of success, power, self-centeredness, and more. Richard Rohr points to a basic need for us to grow into—realizing both the innate gift/beauty of the self and the fact that it is always a gift from above. This is not something the mind can simply hear and receive; the heart must hear, welcome, and learn to live in throughout life.

Historia
A Bridge Too Far is Cornelius Ryan’s masterly chronicle of the Battle of Arnhem, which marshaled the greatest armada of troop-carrying aircraft ever assembled and cost the Allies nearly twice as many casualties as D-day. In this compelling work of history, Ryan narrates the Allied effort to end the war in Europe in 1944 by dropping the combined airborne forces of the American and British armies behind German lines to capture the crucial bridge across the Rhine at Arnhem. Focusing on a vast cast of characters, Ryan brings to life one of the most ill-fated operations of the war.

Excellent recounting and telling, but…
Revisado: 04-05-22
A meticulous and fine account of a terrible battle, as best as I can tell. I wish, though, that I had read the book instead, with the benefit of a set of maps and perhaps a list of names and relationships. But still, it was a clear and very good telling of the hopes and horror of war.
