Historia
Families today are squeezed on every side - from high childcare costs and harsh employment policies to workplaces without paid family leave or even dependable and regular working hours. Many realize that attaining the standard of living their parents managed has become impossible. Alissa Quart, executive editor of the Economic Hardship Reporting Project, examines the lives of many middle-class Americans who can now barely afford to raise children.

An Essential and Necessary Read

Quart’s skill as a journalist is used to compile a logical and compelling argument about American society and the cost of existing today. I appreciated her careful analysis and interviews on the macro environment and how America’s reach for progress has left and will leave so many of us scrambling for new solutions for coping.

Historia
The story we usually tell about childhood and success is the one about intelligence: Success comes to those who score highest on tests, from preschool admissions to SATs. But in How Children Succeed, Paul Tough argues for a very different understanding of what makes a successful child. Drawing on groundbreaking research in neuroscience, economics, and psychology, Tough shows that the qualities that matter most have less to do with IQ and more to do with character: skills like grit, curiosity, conscientiousness, and optimism.

Good Book
Revisado: 05-27-18
This book is chock-full of interesting data and insights about how to inspire children toward success, regardless of socio-economic or environmental conditions. It gives the parent reader much to consider. I felt like a student in a college classroom with all the information shed in the pages of this book. For some, the amount of data may be overwhelming; for me, it was just right.

My 8-yr-old loved it!
Revisado: 05-27-18
The Derek Jeter series is an excellent tool for bringing boys to reading. There are so many storylines to choose from for girls, but I found it challenging to keep my son engaged with age-appropriate storylines for boys. Kudos to Derek Jeter for turning his own story into a relevant and interesting storyline for boys!
