Historia
Nurse Amy Leatheran had never felt the lure of the "mysterious East", but she nonetheless accepts an assignment at Hassanieh, an ancient site deep in the Iraqi desert, to care for the wife of a celebrated archaeologist. Mrs Leidner is suffering bizarre visions and nervous terror. "I'm afraid of being killed!" she admits to her nurse. Her terror, unfortunately, is anything but unfounded, and Nurse Leatheran is soon enough without a patient. The world's greatest detective happens to be in the vicinity, however....

Reader detracted from the story
Revisado: 11-06-24
This was an Agatha Christie that I hadn’t read in years. The story was fantastic, but the reader was not great with accents. Her Poirot voice was especially distracting. Very disappointing.

In the last years of the dying Qing Empire, a courtesan is found frozen in a doorway. Her death is clouded by rumors of foxes, which are believed to lure people by transforming themselves into beautiful women and handsome men. Bao, a detective with an uncanny ability to sniff out the truth, is hired to uncover the dead woman’s identity. Since childhood, Bao has been intrigued by the fox gods, yet they’ve remained tantalizingly out of reach—until, perhaps, now.

Fantastic and Complex Story
Revisado: 07-27-24
This was a beautiful mix of fairy tale and mystery. The characters were well developed, and the story had a wonderful and complex unfolding. One of my favorite selections recently. She was an absolute joy to listen to.

Historia
Despite the fierce, and seemingly personal, objections of secretary Gerald Hadleigh, members of the Midsomer Worthy Writers' Circle press ahead and invite bestselling author Max Jennings to talk to their group. Besides, it's not as though he'll say yes. So when Jennings turns up to their meeting, they are completely over-awed by his presence. But before the evening is over, Gerald has been brutally murdered. Summoned to investigate, Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby discovers that Gerald's life was as much of a mystery to his neighbours as his violent death.

More emphasis on sex than mystery
Revisado: 03-23-24
I enjoyed the television series with John Nettles, but the books seem to spend a lot more time detailing sexual encounters than solving crimes.
Disappointing.

Story was dull and predictable. Characters were neither relatable nor interesting. I felt like I did not care what happened to anyone in this story.

Historia
Few subjects are as compelling-or as endlessly variable-as love and marriage. The Bible is filled with references to husbands and wives, from the story of Adam and Eve to advice in the New Testament, each open to interpretation. In The Meaning of Marriage, Timothy Keller, pastor of New York's Redeemer Presbyterian Church and bestselling author of The Reason for God, uses the scriptures as his guide to show readers what God's call to marriage is, and why this is such a powerful call.

Great resource on marriage.
Revisado: 05-25-23
This book was excellent, my only complaint was the change of narrator for the chapter on submission. The woman seemed very stilted in her delivery. Other than that, it was great and extremely helpful.

Fantastic!
Revisado: 02-04-23
This was a joy to read - complex, full of amazing characterization, and pathos. I have not read anything in a long time that I enjoyed as much. It was also a crime novel full of real-life, lovable characters and scenarios, without stooping to swearing and crude sexual details. Bravo! I cannot wait to read the next one in the series!

Not worth wading through the constant profanity
Revisado: 11-03-22
There were actually two mysteries in this book and only one is solved. The one that I was most interested in was left frustratingly open-ended.
After wading through the dizzying and monotonous repetition of “sh- this” and “f- that”, I was expecting a better ending. It was not even remotely worth it.

Another fantastic story from Ellis Peters. Brother Cadfael really shines in this one. Patrick Tull is by far the best narrator of this series, and his voice makes Brother Cadfael come to life.

The story was great. The narrator was not.
Revisado: 08-26-20
I really enjoyed this mystery. It was my introduction to the author, and I found the characters and plot both engaging and intriguing. However, the narrator was quite distracting because her English accent was so unconvincing. It really was a shame that the story was so mangled in the telling.
