Historia
Filled with breathtaking scenes, the elemental north woods, the sweep of seasons, an iconic American barn, a fateful vision rendered in the falling rain. The Story of Edgar Sawtelle is a meditation on the limits of language and what lies beyond, a brilliantly inventive retelling of an ancient story, and an epic tale of devotion, betrayal, and courage in the American heartland.

I hated the ending
Revisado: 02-08-25
This story was a lovely, coming of age story. And then it was ruined by an awful ending. Why? It could have gone so many ways. It feels like the author got caught up in trying to create lyrical prose instead of a satisfying ending for the reader. Readers should understand this story will end in disaster for the characters and stress to any reader that has PTSD from fire. I’m glad I read the prequel Familiaris first, or I might not have listened to it at all.

Interesting, gentle story
Revisado: 09-19-24
Despite tragic events early in the book, I found the spirit of this story gentle, without the angst of struggle against adversity. Lots of things happened, don’t get me wrong. The response to those events was mostly positive, karma being the great equalizer. I’ll read more of this author.

After the death of his brother, a grief-stricken young man seeks refuge and oblivion in a secluded fishing village dominated by a family of brujas in this haunting debut novel, inspired, in part, by the ramifications of Diné history and thought—a mesmerizing, original tale in the tradition of works by Toni Morrison, Haruki Murakami, and Gabriel García Márquez.

Weird but intriguing
Revisado: 01-27-24
Almost quit this story a couple of times. It was a story about a man dealing with his brother’s death. Was this all a dream? I still don’t know! HA! Very well narrated and that compelled me to keep listening.

Revisado: 07-26-22
I got to the end of the book. The end. I wondered if somehow I accidentally fast-forwarded to the end and missed a bunch of chapters. I liked but didn’t love the book. Decidedly did not like the ending. Of course I’ll read the next installment. Please don’t take 7 years.

Awful narration
Revisado: 08-09-20
I returned this title. It pained me. I LOVE Liane Moriarty. The narration was unbearable. My fervent wish is this: Audible will join with the author to re-record this audiobook with a narrator that earns more than 1 star by your listeners. What a waste of a time and money. Thank you, Audible and Amazon, for allowing exchanges (or I would be really pissed).

good period story, from another perspective.
Revisado: 12-03-17
If you could sum up Our Own Country in three words, what would they be?
I did not enjoy the narrator of this story. This story contains the same characters as The Midwife's Revolt, but told from another characters perspective. The narrator made this story rather unpleasant to listen to.

Family life & all that compelling in-between
Revisado: 09-28-16
Would you listen to Commonwealth again? Why?
Hope Davis. She was born to read Ann Patchett novels.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I liked all the characters. They were real, flawed, interesting.
What does Hope Davis bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Hope Davis - that voice, intonation, gravity, nuance.
If you could rename Commonwealth, what would you call it?
Loved the name - read the book to find out why the novel is named such.
Any additional comments?
GET THIS BOOK! I read a couple of other reviews that said "this isn't Bel Canto or State of Wonder". Yes, it's a different story arch (THANK YOU ANN PATCHETT) - the storyline is instantly appealing, and the characters are all so individual, but connected to each other in ways family is connected to each other. I loved the lifespan of the story, the interesting careers, the thread about law school and working in a swanky hotel bar. Very rich characters. I was really sorry the book had to end, but I am even sorrier for people that pass this book up based on other reviews GET THIS BOOK!

slow start, but interesting history sweep
Revisado: 11-18-14
Would you consider the audio edition of Some Luck to be better than the print version?
I did not read the print version, so I cannot related the two, but generally I think audio books are better than print versions!
What did you like best about this story?
Well told story of middle America during the depression and WWII
Which character – as performed by Lorelei King – was your favorite?
No favorite. Most all of the characters were likable.
Any additional comments?
This story started out very slow - I felt like I was listening to a children's book! Having read other Jane Smiley books, I held on and am glad I did. I'm happy to hear this is a trilogy and am looking forward to the next installment!

Historia
In the wild, when a wolf knows its time is over, when it knows it is of no more use to its pack, it may sometimes choose to slip away. Dying apart from its family, it stays proud and true to its nature. Humans aren’t so lucky. Luke Warren has spent his life researching wolves. He has written about them, studied their habits intensively, and even lived with them for extended periods of time.

Great story, fantastic ensemble performance
Revisado: 03-15-12
Who was your favorite character and why?
I like Joe - his head and heart are in the right place, and who doesn't need to have a lawyer in the family?
What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The ensemble narration underscored the personal and intersecting perspectives and individual motivations.
Who was the most memorable character of Lone Wolf and why?
Luke, of course was the most memorable character for me. I can picture him with blood on his face, and imagine what he must have looked like as he emerged from the Canadian forest after 2 years in the wild.
Any additional comments?
For Jodi Picoult fans, this book doesn't disappoint. No preaching, but a very interesting observation into wolf pack behavior and end of life decisions; likely two things you never thought you'd say in the same sentence. The process of contradiction, compromise and truth telling (something most families will have to face at some point) was heart wrenching at times. Awesome story - I enjoyed every minute!
