The novel was simply wonderfully enjoyable. I would give it 4.5 stars. The narration was pretty good as well, 3.5 stars. It is an interesting premise and I was consistently impressed at the author’s ability to write as if a Napoleonic gentleman rather than a modern American. While I’m hardly an expert on language and expression of that era, the speech and thinking were consistent with the character from start to finish and my image of a Brit of those days. I’m very curious to see this alternative history and the connections between Europe and Asia during this tumultuous period as much as to see the story develop.

The first two Heartstriker books stand apart in an excellent series. Here we get to explore a bit more what Detroit looks like under Algonquin, and learn more about our favorite secondary characters. Bob, Chelsea, Amelia, Justin, Katya, Estella, Svena, Ian, and Ghost all acquire more depth as the novel goes on, setting the stage for a number of them to become main characters going forward.

The plot also gains the intricacy that will be the hallmark of the series going forward, with surprises galore.

Rachel Aaron is still a great author, and the DFZ a great setting, but this one falls flat

The setting and characterization are still A+, but the plot was obvious to readers of her prior works and the twists and the villain more annoying than sinister. The romance was a bit forced as well. Just, nothing quite worked and I longed for Julius and Marcy or Opal. Recording was poor and choppy at times as well, which was a shame because the reading/voice acting was top notch again.

It was also a bit too dark and pessimistic for the world of Julius. The DFZ world Aaron, who is still an exceptional author, built is one of optimism and determination and grit. I didn’t feel that here and it was disappointing. Not a bad book, but it didn’t work for me and wasn’t what I was looking for in an off shoot of Heartstrikers. That might be a bit of a personal problem, but combined with a predictable plot and forced interactions it was too much for me to like this one.

I remain a big Rachel Aaron fan though, so don’t shy away from her works.

A great work for anyone whether they are a woman, love a woman, have ever wanted to love a woman, or have ever wondered about sex as a man or woman.

A fantastic performance of a quick and compelling story. Ms. Harris did a superb job.
